Love this story.

Older film but very important one. True story.

I loved every aspect of this movie. I loved that it respected both sides of the argument showing that fathers have to clean up their act and governments need to back off from too much interference in our lives when it doesn't make sense. Desmond Doyle wasn't portrayed as a bad father either, but as a man who needed to clean himself up and get better role models. I loved that the movie didn't make the nuns or the church, the judges or the government all look evil - instead they made a very human and touching story. I cried several times and laughed - and laughed and cried at the same time when Evelyn took the stand in the ending court scene. I wish modern Hollywood could learn to make movies like this again.

It's hard to find decent movies anymore. Look no further, as this has everything we hope to see when we want to unwind and find real entertainment. Based on a true story and portrayed intelligently, it shows how a man who had his children taken from him after losing his job and having his wife unceremoniously abandon the family. His persistence was what turned this sad event around and true faith as well as support by the Irish community.

*****Why had I not heard of this movie? If you are reading my review, rent, watch, or better, buy it, as it will be an enduring favorite of yours, I guarantee it.I watched this movie because it was recommended to me as a clean, family values-type movie. That is like calling the Taj Mahal a "big house". This movie has everything a movie can have, including a universal appeal, even to those who shun typical "family values" movies. It is a masterpiece.It stars Pierce Brosnan, an actor I normally do not enjoy, and whom I've sterotyped as playing shallow roles. In "Evelyn" he is marvelous, incredible, a great actor. "Evelyn" is based on the true story of Desmond Doyle, a father who loses custody of his three children in 1950's Ireland, when his wife abandons both him and her children. At that time, fathers had limited rights when up against the Catholic Church and the Irish government. The film centers around the struggle of one man to be reunited with his children.However, there is so much more to the movie than just Desmond Doyle's legal struggles. There are his personal challenges, which are many. Ther is the acting of Aidan quinn, Julianna Marguilies, alan Bates, and the children---all so talented, entertaining, exciting. There is the relationship between Evelyn and her beloved grandfather. There is the Irish spirit. This is a film about faith, forgiveness, human failings, and how sometimes so many things can go wrong while everyone is truly trying to do the right thing.It is of special mention that, unlike other films of this genre, no one was "demonized" or portrayed a "villan". It woudl have been temptin to have done this to either the Catholic Church, the Irish justice system, the legal profession, etc.---but instead institutions and professions were portrayed realistically and accurately---in that htye are composed of complex people of various types, all tryin to do the best they can.Unlike other films with a PG rating---which spells "BORING" normally in my view (sorry)---this film is riveting, poignant, inspirational, uplifting, and complicated. How many PG movies are there tha you could discuss for hours with freinds at the coffee shop or pub? This is one of those movies.It is my new favorite movie. Grandma and Grandpa will love it and it wil rmeind them of the great films of their day. Teens will love it, too, and maybe wonder why, since it's probably unlike any other movie the've seen before. Intelligent film goers will have discussions about it. Little children will enjoy it on a different level. It's not a chick flick, either. And even though there are no car chases or sex scenes or typeical violence, men will love it because it's about a man being a real man, something that will appeal to any male, no matter what his character, values, lifestyle, or usual movie preferences.This movie is about what we are all looking for in life, and what Desmond Doyle found.*****

Great historical movie.

Beautiful, true story. thoroughly enjoyed. Prime Video should show more movies like this that have character and a positive message.

a bit dated but still good

Ich liebe diesen Film, er sagt so viel über das katholische Umfeld der 50er Jahre in Irland aus. Vielleicht könnte man auch behaupten, dass Pierce Brosnan da einen Teil seiner traurigen Kindheit in Irland aufgearbeitet hat. Ich denke, es war ihm eine Herzensangelegenheit gerade in diesen Film zu spielen. Somit kommt er auch besonders authentisch und glaubwürdig rüber. Der Film gibt zeitweise eine etwas staubige düstere Stimmung weiter, da er farblich etwas auf 'alten' Film getrimmt ist, wird dann immer wieder aufgeheitert durch Gesangseinlagen, wo Pierce Brosnann irische Folksongs im Pub schmettert in Begleitung seines Filmvaters auf der Geige. Wer hätte gedacht, dass der so smarte Pierce Brosnan auch mal ganz anderes spielen kann mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail und Überzeugungskraft hat er auch die leisen Töne drauf. Von Liebe, Komik bis Verzweiflung ist alles dabei. Tolle Schauspieler, besonders auch die Kinderrollen machen den Film zu einer ganz runden Sache. Ich muss natürlich an dieser Stelle nicht betonen, dass ich ein Pierce Brosnan Fan bin und gereade die leisen und etwas tiefgründigen Filme von ihm sehr mag. Alles in allem ein sehr schöner, stimmiger Film der auch ab und zu etwas auf die Tränendrüse drückt, aber wer kann schon bei diesem Thema wegsehen, wenn Kinder ins Kinderheim müssen...

Brilliant film enjoyed it

Ich habe erst bei Amazon von dem Film erfahren! Habe ja schon viele Filme mit Pierce Brosnan gesehen und er ist einfach ein toller Schauspieler, der die verschiedensten Charakteren spielen kann (allerdings singend bei "Mama Mia" war er mir etwas suspekt...)."Evelyn" ist ein superschöner, interessanter Film mit einer bewegenden Geschichte. Die drei Kinder sind total putzig und auch die Nebendarsteller überraschen mit guten Leistungen und Sprüchen.Man kann sich gar nicht vorstellen, daß es zu der Zeit, als der Film gespielt hat, so zuging und die Kinder einfach dem verbleibenden Erziehungsberechtigten entzogen werden konnten. Ich möchte nicht zu viel verraten, einfach ansehen - für den Preis bekommt man einen echt guten Zeitvertreib geboten!!!

Pierce Brosnan in einer Rolle, die ihm auf den Leib geschrieben scheint! Kein Vergleich zu seiner Bondrolle. Die Geschichte ist einfach anrührend und die drei Kinder sind ebenfalls wunderbar besetzt.Ein Film für die ganze Familie! Wir haben den Film im englischen Original gesehen, und meine kleinen Kinder, welche noch nicht mal englischbewandert sind, waren dennoch -einfach von der Geschichte und den tollen schauspielerischen Leistungen - total berührt und begeistert. Auch die Filmmusik ist wunderschön. Ja, und klar: Pierce`s Gesangseinlage hätte ansich schon einen Grammy verdient ;-)
