Works Fine
I read a lot of complaints about the handle, but mine was fine, tho admittedly, I prefer bare or oiled wood handles and I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about how pretty my tools so long as they are precise, sharp, reliable, organized, and ready for work. That said, this was my first brass head and I quickly discovered it’s nice to have more inertia in a smaller package because you need way less swing, but the smooth surface behaves very differently on the chisel pommel being incredibly smooth and having zero give. If you are doing a lot of clockwise curves the head might unscrew on you, but a dab of epoxy will fix that. Overall good bang for the buck, mine was as described. Might take a rough grit to the brass surface to get a bit more traction if you are carving Latin organ pipes or something for the Vatican, but it allows precise enough cuts for my sloppy carvings as it is.

Sweet.
Both the 8 and 12 ounce versions of these are really nice, particularly for the price. Got these for carving and fine chisel work where I plan to choke up with the head in my palm and use it to rap the chisel butts with a lot of control. They work great for my working style. The handles on mine were unfinished, which is fine. Saves me having to scrape them down for a finish I like. If that bothers you, beware. Also, these are small heads with VERY short handles. I don't know if they would satisfy someone looking to "swing" it like standard size mallets and hammers. You won't be carving any totem poles from logs with these. For me, fit and "finish" are fine and I recommend them.

Buena maza.

Great little mallet
This is a fantastic fine work mallet that is comfortable to hold and use. Great for dovetails!!!

You're really only buying the brass head.
Like most tools these days you're going to have to invest some time into it to make it right...it shouldn't be that way but...The brass head is well done and I spent a minute buffing it if only to remove the Shop Fox logo that looked like it was stuck on by a five year old. It's advertised as a "Maple" handle, but it must be some kind of off world maple or maybe some weird island nation maple I've never heard of. Think of it as the chineseum of wood rather than metal.Anyway, y'all will need to remove the head and add a drop of locktite to keep the head on during use, and while you have it off you might as well sand down and refinish the handle to the hand tool finish of your choice, which will result in you saying it's still awful so you'll end up just making a new one. After that you'll be left with a nice solid little mallet for fine or detail work... I kind of like it after I got done with it as it allows for a lot of control for delicate corners.

Good weight
Good size and weight for a portable tool. Fits into the traveling tool bag with other leatherwork tools

perfect for dovetails
I purchased this mallet for removing the waste in dovetails. It's the perfect weight for this task and I love it's small size....update... perhaps i should have been more specific. i did not mean chopping the waste in cabinet dovetails or dovetails for a full sized tool chest. for those tasks i would choose a more robust mallet. (12 oz. is 12 oz. after all.) where this tool excels is in finer work, like chopping the skinny pins of a thin jewelry box or small drawer, this is where it's small size and concentrated weight lend themselves the kind of precision necessary for such delicate jobs. so, after over two years this is still my favorite tool for detail work... update... the handle finally broke after many years of service. I made a new one from some oak i had laying around. Made it both thicker and longer and it is now more comfortable for my large hands. Still a great value for what i paid.

This is a good tool at a good price
This is a great palm mallet -- not designed to be swung by the handle but rather used in place of the palm of your handle to tap a gouge or chisel with control -- as in wood carving. The handle is unfinished which is desirable because it allows the you to reshape it slightly if it doesn't fit your hand. After shaping, if desired, it can be lightly sanded and varnished to seal it. The handle is held to the head with a substantial machine threaded screw. 12 oz is a perfect weight for me.

I like it.
Nice little mallet. The head is threaded on by a bolt through the handle so you could make your own handle if you wanted. The handle arrived a bit loose bit it takes 2 seconds to tighten it.The handle is smooth with no cracks or finish on it.

Fit and finish average at best
Handle not centred or straight, comes loose easily and finish pretty poor
