This is the Book !!
I loved it! I am fairly fluent in Spanish, having lived in Mexico and gotten a Bachelor's Degree in the language, but neither my friends nor my teachers along the way wanted to "corrupt" me with slang or obscenities. So I always felt there was a gap in my learning, which this little book fills in nicely. Its contents run the gamut from the simply informal to cool slang, funny insults, explicit sexual terms, and raw swear words. It gives you all the nuances to understand how a word or phrase is intended, so that you don't embarrass yourself if you attempt to use a new saying--or it lets you know the speaker's frame of mind if you are simply the listener. There are sections devoted to eating, sports, entertainment, working out, and so forth. Written in 2008, the book is quite up-to-date which is important as colloquial speech tends to evolve quickly. And as the Spanish-speaking world is so diverse, the author made a point to differentiate which phrases are used in different countries (although he tried to write using terms that would pretty much be understood universally). And it's got all the new-tech stuff you might want: lots of computer-ese, text messaging lingo, etc.I read the book with a highlighter, skipping many expressions that I would never use in either English or Spanish. That left me with exactly what I wanted, a short and colorful list to expand my use of the vernacular. Andale!

Very Helpful!
D!RTY SPANISH is an excellent book for any person who is studying Spanish; it doesn't matter if you are a beginner or an expert. This book touches down on everything! Since I have received the item, I carry it around with me wherever I go. Whenever I have a few minutes to spare, I pull it out of my purse and read a few lines. Some of them, I admit, make me giggle a little. Sometimes it even makes me blush. If you plan to purchase this book, be prepared to learn a new side of Spanish that you have probably never seen in the past. Well, that is, not unless you actually live and/or work around Hispanics and hear them saying these things. This little book is the best and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the slightest interest in it.**UPDATE: Since purchasing this book, I have bought it as gifts for two friends who nearly stole mine out of excitement and interest. They both love their copies and I'm sure you would love yours as well!**Happy Reading!

Great for someone to have more relaxed conversation
bought it for my boyfriend, he had taken Spanish back in high school about 10 years ago and now that we are dating (I'm Mexican) he's been trying to remember his Spanish since he hasn't had to use it. we are taking a trip to mexico in November to visit my dad. great book for someone who is looking to have more "day to day, relaxed" type of conversations vs more formal. Some slang is a bit harsh (sounds so much worse when said in Spanish than English)So with that said I did have to go through the book and mark up certain things on how "we" say it and how it would be used etc.As a Spanish speaker, i had fun going through the book- boyfriend thought it was good, he likes that its simple yet very helpful~ana

Disorganized, Contains Typographical Errors
As a native Spanish speaker I was disappointed with this book. I gave it two stars because it contains at least some useful material. My main gripe with the book is how disorganized it is. I liked the fact that it contains slang from Mexico down to Argentina, but the slang is completely disorganized. You can't use Mexicanisms with someone from Bolivia or Chile or anywhere. Sometimes the regionalisms are not even labeled as such - so the reader would not know with whom to use a phrase or word. A non native speaker will have a hard time with this book. Slang in the Spanish language is regional. What works in one country does not work in the next. Eg. You say X phrase to someone from Mexico. It turns out that X phrase is only understood in Colombia. So your Mexican interlocutor will have no clue what you're saying -- and vice versa. The idioms are regionally mixed and this is not effective. Eg. you will read a Mexicanism, next to a Venezuelanism, coupled with an Argentinism. I believe only a native speaker can benefit from this book as a reference. I intended to give this book to friends that are learning Spanish, but this book would only confuse them and it would be counterproductive to their learning. What I can do is pick sentences from different chapters and explain them to them. Hope my review is helpful to you. Had I known this fact before the purchase, I would not have bought this book.

Offers an inside look to the "dirty" side of Spanish
I have been studying Spanish for many, many, years. I know a lot of the mainstream slang. I don't really have experience with the more "dirty" side of the language, as I have learned in educational settings and through travel. This book does provide some insight to someone like me. I like that I can get a little bit more feel for the cultural aspect of "dirty" Spanish. One thing I did notice is that some of the "literal" translations offered by the author really aren't literal. Other than that, it can be helpful to have an understanding of this level of language, even though it might not ever be used.

Excellent Introduction to Spanish Slag *and* Profanity (Review by Ryan Mease)
This is a wonderful resource for both it's stated topic (profanity) as well as general Spanish slang. There are chapters in here about dining (how do you describe the various states of cooked meat?), sports, texting, etc. This is really a general introduction to colloquial Spanish with a chapter or two on Spanish profanity, which is *excellent* because a book on profanity alone would be very short. If you're looking for an introduction to Spanish slang and would love to get more information about the seedier side of Spanish, don't miss out. -Ryan Mease

Fine but not super useful
I like this but the art is sorta cheap and I feel it’s a little dated. It also doesn’t add context or explain the words well but just gives translation. It’s better as a novelty gift than actually to learn

Very entertaining
This is good. Loads of lists so I have had to be judicious and pick only the swear words that I want to use and sure of. Good to use with les fonctionaires...like most French do too! The only thing, but not a markdown, is that it hasn't picked up on regionalisation (is there such a word?) of swear words. Some acceptable in the south and certainly not acceptable in the north, and vice versa, but as long as you know that and limit your cursing to what you know to be OK, then it' fine.

Will only make whoever's using it look stupid.
Mixes up regional variations of Spanish from all over, and several words and expressions are translated plain wrong. Will only make whoever's using it look stupid.

As filthy as the name implies, and just as hilarious
Hilarious and comprehensive book, that I gifted to a friend who was going for 3 weeks to Barcelona for a bartending course. Him and his fellow students loved it.I won't go into too much detail for sake of spoilers, but it contains such lines as 'What the c*ck have you been up to?'.Wonderful read even if you have zero intention of going to Spain.

Excellent companion in tricky situations :-)
If I didn't know how say it, now I know it not only in English, but in Spanish too. whatever colloquialism you were looking for, you will find it in this book. Acts as a certain attraction to motivate the teenage group to study "the real" language.

Hilarious and brilliant!
This book is fantastic! Assuming you know the basics of Spanish, or perhaps a little more, then this book is easy to grasp and will definitely brighten up your day with silly phrases and such. It's rather amusing, and you are still learning as well as having fun.. and its very affordable too!
