Correct, this conversion kit is needed only if “converting” from auto locking hubs to manual. If you already have manual locking hubs, you won’t need it.

Adam, I just converted my 1995 Ford F-150 and used the Mile Marker 95-32720 Conversion Nut Kit. You will absolutely need this nut kit as the stock automatic bearing retaining system will be missing the hub components to hold the retaining key in place. You will also need a Great Neck OEM 25243 Axle Spindle Locknut Socket to remove the strange stock bearing adjusting nut unless the nut isn't that tight and you can work it loose inside. You will also need a Wilmar W1271 4 Lug 1/2-Inch Ton 4 Wheel Drive Lock Nut Tool to tighten the new nuts. The outer nut has to be torqued to 140 foot pounds, so no way around not having this socket. It's all worth it to have a nice hub system that works great!!

Q: are the working internals metal or aluminum?

I believe the internals of mine were steel, however it was several years ago and the truck has been sold. They were easy to install and worked perfectly.
