I have quite a collection of salt & pepper grinders, but these by far are the best yet. I had been using a German pair of wooden carved grinders which were beautiful and ground by a black metal rotary handle on the top (used maybe for the past 10 years or so). They produced beautiful grinds of both salt and pepper, but had 2 major flaws, in my opinion. One, because they were wooden, you could not tell when they were low on either salt or pepper and needed refilling. But, invariably, they needed refilling DURING a meal which was a major pain. Also, because the salt/pepper were held in a tiny interior vertical chamber, they held very little and needed refilling maybe once a week. The other complaint about these mills was that they were open on the bottom and had to be kept on a little plate because they constantly dribbled ground salt and pepper wherever they were placed.However, these new grinders have solved all those problems, plus more! Because they have large glass bottoms, you can see exactly how much you have left. And because these clear bottoms are so large -- they each hold maybe 1/3 to 1/2 cup of coarse salt or peppercorns -- they have only needed filling once since I purchased them in June (it is now October). Much better than once a week! Also, because of the nice glass bottoms, (they grind from the top, turning them upside down to use them) they don't leave a mess anywhere you place them. They also have a few more nice perks: the grind can be made coarser or finer right from the top of the grinding mechanism, instead of having to use a tiny screwdriver on the bottom of the previous wooden ones. Also, these come with a nice, tight-fitting silicone-edged top which keeps the contents free of moisture and also helps keep the table clean. Just a perfect pair of grinders, in my humble opinion. You can't go wrong with these! I love them.I also must add a word about the seller of this product. My first set arrived with one of the grinders' glass bottoms broken. I contacted Amazon, made arrangements to return the defective merchandise. Even before all of this could be accomplished, a new set arrived on my doorstep, sent via next day shipping, at no cost to me. What SUPERIOR service!! I must commend this seller, who I believe is located in Lexington, KY and I think their name had "Chef" in it somewhere. I apologize for not remembering their name after their superior customer service, but this took place in June and it is now October. I meant to write this review sooner, but a number of intervening events delayed this review. All in can say is, EXCELLENT product, EXCELLENT seller!!

We've been through several slat and pepper sets. We weren't sure about this one but we have been very pleased with the capacity, ease of operation and durability.

They don't grind "tightly", if that makes any sense. But they are attractive and do the job minimally.

I'm confused by the positive reviews for these. First thing I noticed out of the box: they felt and looked cheap.Then, what I hadn't realized when viewing online, the lids (which it says are there to keep things inside fresh) are inconvenient, b/c you have to remove them to use your salt & pepper. If you use these and then set them down, the grinders look like tiny gumball machines. So now they're not even aesthetically pleasing either.

I purchased this as a gift. When I received it the glass on one jar had a major flaw in it. If I had purchased it for myself I may have kept it. Being a gift for someone else it is going back. I can't comment on how well it works.
