Beautiful artwork and interesting characters, yet....
So I actually discovered I''S in a bookstore about a year ago. I really loved the cover art (being a fan of more realistic-looking manga by artists such as Takeshi Obata and Norihiro Yagi) and the artwork inside, but I never bought it. I told myself I would buy it next time.A year later I suddenly remember I wanted to read this so I read Book 1 online and bought Vol 2 on Amazon. So yes, the artwork is intricate and detailed just as I like it - the way Katsura draws hair is fantastic in my opinion. Every strand has been drawn meticulously. There is a lot more fan service that I expected. The covers are slightly misleading as most of them present images of young girls fully clothed - a lot of the story partly revolves around a teenage boy's fantasies so I suppose, seeing quite a few panty-shots and girls clad in tight clothing was no real surprise. The book introduces Ichitaka's old best friend Itsuki (pictured at the front). At first I wasn't sure about her - I thought she was just another loud-mouthed comic relief character, but one little thing in particular caught my attention - she has a genuine interest in modelling/sculpting!I like this aspect of her personality - it definitely adds more to her character - she's ridiculously creative and talented yet I like how Katsura doesn't shove this in our faces. When this interest was suddenly revealed, it made me think perhaps her outlandish behaviour is just a cover-up for something more...So I haven't read the other books yet but I definitely think I will be buying Vol 3. I'm not really big on fan service which is there just to because it can be, but Katsura shows he is capable of adding depth to his characters and I'm curious to see where he takes them.Hopefully you will be seeing a review from me for Vol 3 shortly :)
