Mess with Your Mates
There is a passive aggressive war that goes on between people with children. They started it when they bought your child a toy xylophone. You return their volley by buying a drum for their child. Before you know it, you are trading the loudest and messiest toys you can find. 'DIY Music Maker Science Lab' by Learning Resources may just be the perfect weapon as not only do you get loud instruments, but you can also make a mess when you build them.Inside the box you get instructions to make instruments, but also some experiments to do with sound. As this is a Learning Resource Toy the instructions lean towards education, but you can treat them like crafts. The tambourine will last the longest as the guitar and pan pipes feel very DIY. They are fun to make, but you will need to be careful using them. This is a good set to try out and play, but it is a little expensive as you can buy the finished things for cheaper. Therefore, this is a toy for the more science minded child who wants to know the reason why instruments can sound different. They will get the added benefit from making their own instruments and reading around the subject.

Fun and easy to build. Entertaining to play with.
The media could not be loaded. It was very easy and very fun to assemble these little music instruments. My toddler and I spent lots of hours playing with them. It was actually interesting for me to see how easy it is to make simple instruments which sound nice too. These became one of the main toys form my toddler daughter. They were more of an entertainment than a learning music resource for my toddler. Nevertheless, she became familiar with music and sound making. We liked it so I happily recommend it.

Slightly costly
Comes well presented in a colourful cardboard box, with it showing you on the front and back what you're getting and what you're making. Inside you get the pirces to make 3 instruments and 10 activities to do with them. You get a storybook and lab guide in one. The glossy coloured version in English and a black and white Spanish version. You can literally open the box and get started straight away. None of the makes need lots of added extras, only something simple like water, glasses, dry rice and food colouring. The lab guide shows you how to make the instruments and the activities to follow. It even has lots of little interesting facts to help you understand and expand your knowledge. Clear to read and understand, step by step, simple to create. A hands on set, aimed at children aged 5+. Perfect to encourage children to be interested in music and sound and learn what's going on. It is quite straightforward and easy to do, once you've made it and followed through the guide, it probably wont be touched or played with again. The quality of the components could be a little better, to match it's high price tag. Something to help children learn aswell as having fun along the way.

Good distraction but overpriced
I got this for my 9 year old brother to keep him entertained during half term and to distract him from the heavy screen time of television, tablet and mobile phone. He found it to be a fun activity however it was slightly babyish for him and he soon lost interest within 20 mins of constructing the musical instruments. The instructions are very easy to follow, as are the construction of the instruments. Its a great activity to keep children engaged and to show how different instruments are constructed to make different sounds. My complaints would be the price as once it is constructed you won't be reaching for it ever again, and the price is extremely expensive for what it is. I would rather pay for Monopoly which i know would get many uses for years to come. It's targeted for children ages 5 to 9, however elder children will most likely get bored.

Nice learning resource
In the box you get a colourful booklet which doubles as a storybook and lab guide. The booklet is fully colour illustrated. Easy to follow guides to build the musical instruments and experiment instructions. There are 3 musical instruments; a drum, guitar and pan pipes. The guitar is a cardboard box with elastic bands, the drum is a plastic drum which can be filled with the plastic beads provided. The panpipes are thick plastic straws you insert into a foam holder.Overall it’s a nice kit which is good for learning and sensory play. Targeted for 5+ but older children I think would lose interest pretty quick due to the limitations and construction of the kit.Current priced at £29.99, which I think is a high price point. I think this would be better value around the £17 mark.Overall our daughter enjoyed it, but lost interest within 30 mins.

Poor quality and value
Some cheap bits of plastic, cardboard and rubber bands. If these things had been precision engineered and tested, so that you were assured of some passable sounds, then maybe it would be forgivable. The instruments are not even aesthetically pleasing. The "story book" is little better and did not interest our children at all. Even the box the kit comes in is poor quality. It is easy to find better commercial sets for less money. Even better would be to do the environment and your purse a favour and make some instruments out of stuff that you already have at home. Encouraging children to recycle in the process.

The book is quite dull, the objects quite basic
This is a fun toy but the story book is quite dull and the objects are all too plasticky simple. The book is a great idea but the story might need to be shorter and to the point. Definitely not worth £30. The transparent drum is fun (but it is not supposed to be transparent, though it is totally your choice. The flute is lovely as well, but having something slightly more natural, reed'y, would have at least justified the price. One huge plus - all the musical instruments are fun to built, represent real instruments very well and work!! But I would have never paid £30 for this set.
