The MRCOOL UNIVERSAL DIY AC & HEAT PUMP CONTINUES TO HEAT IN TEMPERATURES AS LOW AS -22! The 2 to 3 Ton 18 SEER MrCool Universal DIY Central Heat Pump Split System is an innovative heating and cooling system that will keep you cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and will save you money year-round! Unlike conventional heat pump split systems, the Universal uses a DC inverter compressor to modulate performance based on fluctuating demand. Since the MrCool Universal Central Heat Pump Split System utilizes a DC inverter compressor, it is able to operate at reduced capacity for long periods, which saves serious money. The Universal can deliver 100% cooling capacity at temperatures as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 80% heating performance at minus 4 degrees, and continue producing heat down to minus 22. One of the best features of the MrCool Universal system is the Pre-Charged No-Vac Quick Connect line set. This unique line is kink resistant, precharged with R410a refrigerant, and uses Quick Connect fittings. The No-Vac lines simply plug into the condenser and air handler. No cutting, no brazing, no vacuuming, and no charging is required. It reduces hours of installation work down to minutes. This makes doing it yourself a breeze.

DIY install went without a hitch
Update: After owning this unit for 6 months I am still very happy. Our home has never been more comfortable and quiet. Zero problems so far. Attached is a screenshot of the monthly usage report from the Sensi smart thermostat that I installed to control the MrCool heat pump.Original review: I replaced my furnace with this heat pump as a DIY project about a week and a half ago, and I'm very happy with the results so far. Our weather has been all over the place since then. We've experienced outdoor temperature fluctuations between about 35 degrees and 94 degrees so since I completed the install, and the Mr Cool Universal Heat Pump/Air Handler system has heated and cooled our home to a very comfortable 71 degrees without any problem. I scaled the system back to 2-ton mode when I installed it to see how it would do. So far so good. I may convert it back to the default 3-ton (36,000 BTU) mode If I find that it's having a hard time keeping up with hotter or colder temperatures later this year. This new system is much, much quieter than our old furnace. Most of the vents are almost silent, and I only hear a light fan noise from one or two vents closest to the air handler. The inverter motors turn on quietly with no jolting sound whatsoever, which I think helps me to sleep better at night. The outside unit is very quiet too. Standing right next to this condenser I hear my neighbors condenser louder than my own, and the neighbor's condenser is about 40 feet away. This is my first HVAC replacement. I consider myself pretty handy but the project was still a little intimidating to take on because I had zero experience replacing furnaces or working with refrigeration lines. I'm glad I did the install myself though. The no-vac hose installation was pretty easy. The hardest part of the install was building a ducted stand for the air handler to sit on for the air return (I did the upflow configuration), but youtube videos helped me to figure that part out. I probably saved two or three thousand dollars doing this project myself, which means I was able to get a nicer system than a cheaper/less efficient system would have cost to be professionally installed. I consider this a double win. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you do the install yourself:You will need big wrenches to install the lineset. Technically you are supposed to use a torque wrench to tighten them to the exact amounts specified in the manual, but I couldn't find anywhere local that had an open ended torque wrench that would fit the 5/8 inch line set fittings ( I think one required a 1 1/4 inch wrench, and another was a little bigger (maybe 1 and 3/8 inches.) I used the crows feet attachments I had to tighten the 3/8 inch fittings without a problem, but the bigger lineset fittings I had to just give it my best guess. No leaks so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed. One thing I couldn't find anywhere in the Mr Cool manuals was whether or not the air handler had a slot for an air filter. It does have slot in the bottom that has a metal mesh filter. It's not really an air filter, but it looks like you could slide it out and use a 20x20x1 inch air filter in this spot. I can't say for sure because I decided to add a 4-inch filter box underneath the air handler instead.Once you finish connecting the lineset you should open the valves to release the refrigerant on both the outside unit (condenser) and the air handler. The instructions only mention doing this for the condenser.I should also mention that the system seems to be very efficient. I occasionally use a meter to see how much electricity the condenser is using, and the highest I've seen it at so far is only around 6.5 amps (240 volts). Again, this is at the 2-ton setting. There were no reviews reviews on this system when I bought it, and it looks like this will be the first. Hopefully it will help anyone deciding whether or not to buy it. I'm glad I did.

Impressed Good unit so far
Install went well the unit is running smoothly as of right now 29 outside 75 inside the only complaint is for the no vac line set the crows feet you need are a few different sizes and most hardware stores dont care anything over an inch in my area. Was needing a 1 1/4 and 1 5/16. You also use a 15/16 and 7/8 wish the manual had the tools listed had to find out once I got the unit. The condenser (outside) is heavy if I remember correctly it was 250 lb and air handler is 150lb. The air handler has a slot for the filter however since mine is in the attic I laid horizontal and connected a plenum and ran a 16in flex to my return. I have a nest thermostat and the unit runs a B wire for the switch valve when its connected the nest will detect the wires if you wired it correctly, it will ask if it or an O (most common) or B, this determines if you pump heats or cools get it backwards will heat in cool mode and cool when needing heat. Both O and B wires connect to the same port it just determine the normal position of the valve in the pump.

Efficient, compact, possible to DIY install
Pretty quiet and compact unit, managed to DIY install 3 ton myself including ductwork, custom plenums and new electrical / drainage / thermostat wiring in 3 full weekends. Quick connect lineset made this possible (no vacuum or soldering needed!) Seems to be pretty efficient so far (northern california climate)Only issues:1) wiring diagrams on condenser and manual were incorrect, need to be updated. When I called support they quickly helped me but that was a half day of wasted work2) condenser access panel is extremely hard to close with the quick connect linesets, since with the insulation they don't fit well into the opening. Took more than an hour just to get the thing closed and screws in place. Would be helpful to think through that process and detail in the installation manuals better.3) concrete anchors were pretty meh. Didn't hold very well and ended up having to buy my own

Big fan of MrCool
Short version: Product is exactly as described. Installs easily (assuming you know what you're doing), works well, connects to existing thermostat (Honeywell Wifi), no issues. I've had it running for 2 weeks now set on '3 ton' mode. It definitely cools better than the older model I replaced. Oh, and its QUIET! Before it arrived we set up a pad off to the side to move the compressor away from a bedroom wall -- complete waste of work. When standing beside the unit, you can carry on a normal conversation with no problem -- no way sound would be a problem through a wall. Can't speak to the pre-pressurized lineset. They look like they would work with high quality connectors, etc. But, we ended up not using the because the run was too short so we cut and connected the copper as normal. There were no surprises, quality seems good, and the unit is functioning well as a drop-in replacement for an old ducted AC with Air Handler. Recommended.
