Tried it with a paper mask and worked very well - but the elastic that goes over the ears had to be looped round the button part of the strip a few times to stop it coming off. Wouldn't recommend leaving the mask attached and hanging around the neck because unless the elastic is tied it does come off. Great idea and quite comfortable.
