Eric Sloane's Weather Book

Helped me win my junior meteorologist badge!
When I ordered this book I thought it would be just about folksy weather wisdom. Was I wrong. If you live at the shore or on the plains this will give great insight to so much.

well written but...
As always Sloane is a very detailed person in explaining the topic he covers and he researches his books well. I am using this book for a 6th grade homeschool weather study. I like his detailed descriptions and visualizations but his languages is sometimes archaic for a modern kid. It would be good if a publisher went through and eventually revised it to more modern language. I don't regret buying it. Weather is complex and understanding the pressure of how air above us behaves has to be explained and broken down in stages. I will be finishing this book as our study. I've simply told my son/student I don't expect him to understand it all this is only an intro for future grades.

The late Eric Sloane said the best way to learn something is to write a book ...
The late Eric Sloane said the best way to learn something is to write a book about it. And learn he did. In fact his research on weather made him somewhat of an expert and this book passes along what he learned. As usual he accompanies what he says with his sketches and artwork that illustrate and enhance the text. Yes times have changed and Sloane may seem dated to many younger technology dependent readers, but he wrote to teach and to pass on what he learned and what came before him. It was his desire that the past not be forgotten, but recalled and appreciated for what can be learned. This book teaches about weather, and in its own way about Eric Sloane.

Excellent Book.
This book will blow you over with all the awesome drawings and great observational science. It has inspired the whole family with nature studies. We can’t pass by the lake now without guessing wind speed.

loads of excellent hand drawn diagrams to illustrate the ideas
What a superb book! Weather is such a complex thing, but Sloan makes it accessible, understandable, and by God, fascinating. Pithy and down to Earth language, loads of excellent hand drawn diagrams to illustrate the ideas, and a gently humorous tone lead us to a solid understanding of what makes weather. This should be a textbook in schools!

Helps make sense
I’ve got a few weather books and this one helps in comprehension of some key concepts, with the use of illustrations, that other books don’t quite explain well (or at least well enough for me to understand). It is inexpensive and I highly recommend it. I only wish it came in an additional pocket format too, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

A Must
I've been reading weather books for ages and none gets even close to this one. A must in meteorology - simple and easy to understand yet it goes deep in the subject.

Beautifully written and illustrated - one of my children's favourite school books this year!
We homeschooled using Ambleside Online this year, and this was one of the books i didn't already own. What a find! It was the most detailed, informative, and fun book - i learned a lot and so did my children - and on those bleary mornings, when this was on the list of assignments, it was usually the first one reached for.

Interesting Reading
What I noticed first was it was not 'dry reading'. The information is presented such that it is more like a conversation than a text book of facts. And a note that even when things are looking one way - mother nature has her own ideas.Still in early chapters, but I like it.
