Photo-Guide to the C-17 Globemaster!
Boeing's tubby but rugged C-17 is a trash-hauler jack-of-all-trades. Bill Norton supplies a nicely-done photo-tribute to the Globemaster III heavy military transport in this 2013 Squadron/Signal release, part of their IN ACTION series.First flown in 1985, the C-17 was designed to compliment existing C-5 and C-141 a/c while also handling tactical ops flown by C-130s and C-141s. Technical problems and cost over-runs reduced in cuts in aircraft purchases. Production of the widebodied behemoth was increased however after the 9/11 attacks and other military developments. Since its service introduction, the C-17 has become THE premier USAF airlifter. Also flown by the RAF, RAAF and other air forces, it has established an exemplary service record. As with other IN ACTION titles, Norton's book offers up 80 pages of crisply-reproduced b&w and color photographs, diagrams and three-views of the subject a/c. (Most of the over 220 pix are in color). The wealth of images is complimented by a comprehensive, authoritative text. Norton does an excellent job of summarizing the C-17's development and operational career.Though I'm partial to fighters and bombers, C-17 GLOBEMASTER III IN ACTION is a fitting tribute to this long-serving and vitally important aircraft. Recommended.

C-17 Globemaster III In Action
Another excellent book from Squadron Signal. Yes, the 'zoomies' (fighter pilots) give the 'ash & trash' haulers (cargo pilots) grief, but every fighter jock knows how important these transport planes are.The C-17 traces its history back to 1968. Changing requirements, budget constraints delayed fielding & production for many years, but what finally evolved was a versatile, rugged plane with greater capabilities, less maintenance, enormous range as well at STOL on rough airfields.Author Bill Norton provides a concise but thorough review of the design of the plane. 100% crisp, clear color photos, cut-aways, line drawings and excellent captions supplement the narrative. These help the reader see the complexity of the C-17 – how it manages to carry troops, wide body cargo, wounded, airborne operations – it can even refuel airborne tankers! This book is absolutely a must have if you're building a model of the C-17, especially if you need interior shots or making a diorama. It's also an excellent choice for aviation buffs who love to see the nuts and bolts of a plane. The C-17 “Moose” (affectionate nickname, not official name) is an awesome plane and this book demonstrates that perfectly.
