The Franlzjiurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote of this recital by pianist Hélène Grimaud at the Kammer Musiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie, "She doesn't only play the piano - she feels it and she lives it. Every single note proves her devotion to perfection... her unconventional style captivates everyone in the audience." Arguably one of the very top pianists of her generation, her concert career took off in 1987 when she was in her early twenties and she now performs with major orchestras around the world as well as being in demand for recital appearances. The spontaneity of her playing is breathtaking. Not to be afraid of taking risks and always to play as though it is the first time is Hélène Grimaud's maxim. Her program for this recording features Bach's Chaconne in D minor, Beethoven's Sonata No. 31 in a flat Op. 110, and Brahms' Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5. As encores, she plays two of Rachmaninov's Etudes tableaux Op. 33.

Let's give credit to her Brahms...
I see a lot of people have already commented how great her Beethoven in this recording is. Bach/Busoni Chaconne has like 2 million views on Youtube so that speaks by itself. However the Brahms... The Brahms Sonata is just supremely beautiful and out of this world, and I am so sad that the other pieces really have taken all the spotlight. The gentleness, love, sensitivity, passion, and careful tenderness she put in this piece is just magical...It's a great DVD really, great camera and sound quality. I would listen to it frequently (mainly to listen to her gorgeously played Brahms Sonata).

Grimaud, the ultimate in sensitivity. Beethoven would approve.
It's always funny to hear the occasional odd person comment that Grimaud's popularity is only based on her looks. A ridiculous statement like that only firmly establishes the fact that the critic has no musical ear what so ever. Grimaud is the best and should for sure be ranked with the greatest pianists of all time. Her depth and sensitivity is so obvious even in her demeanor at the piano. Listen and see for yourself. It's not subtle. And this particular program couldn't be better. A fine addition to any classical collection. Buy it.

Helene Grimaud Piano Recital
Helene Grimaud is a tremendous modern day classical pianist. I might liken her to the great Lili Kraus of years ago. Her style and technical skills at playing classical piano pieces are par excellence. She does all of her pieces with utmost accuracy and exactness while still adding creativity and little nuances to her classical piano style. A great purchase and a lovely piece to hear.

I saw Helene Grimaud perform with the Canton [Ohio] Symphony Orchestra many, many years, and she blew me away! Since then, I have been buying every single DVD she has been on. In other words, I am a bit biased.
