QoR Watercolor Lift Aid by GOLDEN, 4 oz. Bottle, Professional Mediums & Grounds

I love working in watercolor, but have always been too heavy handed with the pigment in a way that can make layering muddy, and I've always had a hard time achieving the delicate effect I see in my head.The downside to this stuff is you can't bring it into your work after you've made the mistake or applied too much pigment, you've got to think ahead and use it before, because it can only help you lift what's on top of it. I usually mix some into my base wash and will sometimes apply it with a spray bottle between phases, sort of like a workable fixative for watercolor.The nice part for me, personally, about this particular offering from Golden is that the neck of the jar is very narrow and I'm not tempted to dip my brush into it. I had another bottle from a brand that rhymes with "Grim Sore, & Gluten" that I'd been dipping a brush into directly and it developed the most remarkable mold bloom in the liquid that I now regret throwing away without photographing.So it's not a magic wand or a watercolor eraser (get yourself some white watercolor ground if that's what you're after), but if lifting color back off the paper is a part of your process, this stuff is a game-changer.

I honestly wasn't expecting much, but this definitely impressed me. I tested it on a small piece of watercolor paper first and was not disappointed. It lifted the color off almost completely-- enough to fix a potential mistake. I'm using a medium quality paper, so I have a suspicion it doesn't work on low-grade watercolor papers. Make sure to test the Lift Aid on a smaller piece of paper first.

It does work but only slightly better than a scrubber brush. It does better when just trying to lift highlights than trying to correct a mistake.
