Making Bead Flowers and Bouquets (Dover Crafts: Bead Work)

Black and white photos not helpful
I wouldn't have bought this if I'd realized it was in black and white. The contrast is bad, and the pictures are so small, you can't see them well. The instructions have illustrations, which are easy enough to follow, but it would be nice if the sample photos were easier to see. Also, it's hard to know how many beads to use for each project. She lists the amounts in strands and bunches rather than an actual number of beads or number of grams. It's really inconvenient considering most seed beads are sold loose and by the gram/ounce. She says you can use loose beads instead, but only gives amounts in strands/bunches. It's important because all the projects require you to put all the beads on your wire ahead of time and work with the wire directly off the spool, not cut. Also, though there is a little section on miniature flowers, I wish she explained how to go about shrinking down the all the life sized flower projects. Full instructions for each flower isn't necessary, but just some general instructions on shrinking the size of a design would have been nice. Some of these things come out huge!

One of the earliest modern guides, and still useful.
Yes, it has black and white instructions with color plates of finished projects. If you're looking for the history of the craft as well as a decent beginner's method of creating the flowers, this isn't a bad start. Be warned through--like a lot of early books on craft instruction, this reads like a set of assembly instructions after a while. (Make form A, attach to form B, etc.) If you're familiar with craft books from the 50s-70s, it shouldn't be a problem.

Not bad but I wish it had better pictures
This book has nice directions for projects and had ideas that I never really tried before. It is an older book, but I really don't mind that because of the nice projects. The only thing I wish is that it had better pictures for the projects so you can really get a better idea of what the finished product would look like.

Great book.
I actually ordered this book for my mother who does beaded flowers and plants. She loves it. It had great idea's in it. There is nothing in it she dislikes. It had caused her to want to explore more books of beaded flowers in the future.

it's okay
I wish there were more colored photos. The instructions could be clearer and I find I change them to suit my needs. It is a good basic book and YouTube can add dimension to the lessons

Not for the beginner!
Have just received this book and was, frankly, disappointed. It was first published in 1967, with this edition being first printed in 1983 and reissued in 2002 - though why they bothered I don't know! The reprint is an unabridged version of the 1960's original and it looks so dated. Photographs are limited, and what there are are small black and white images which really don't show any detail. The illustrations to accompany the instructions are hand drawn giving the whole thing a very old-fashioned feel, especially when you compare it to the lavishly photographed craft books we have grown accustomed to!On the plus side it does give instructions for a great many different types of flowers. For those with some experience in french beading these are quite detailed and I reckon easy enough to follow even without step by step photos (although I haven't actually tried any of them yet). It's not instantly inspiring, and I think there are better ones out there (try French Beaded Designs by Donna DeAngelis Dickt). However, it is very comprehensive, so may have something to offer.
