Amazing Movie!
Love the artistry and way the movie presented the message. Has the same effect as a Taylor Swift song. Best movie ever

She Deserves Better
I honestly had mixed emotions about this movie. I felt deep sympathy for the girl, stuck in a situation that would cause many of us to fall into a fantasy world, especially if we were so young. Her mother, struck with a debilitating disease at a young age, totally depends on her daughter, who is still in school. The woman is in a wheelchair, and the girl comes home one afternoon to see her mother had fallen from the wheelchair. Struggling, she finally is able to get her back in the wheelchair. If you're wondering about the father, he disappeared years ago, when the mother was diagnosed. The girl meets a handsome young man, and they take off in his old Chevy(I think it's a Camaro), and drive a long distance to the countryside. They have sex. Then, she starts seeing his mental instability. Later, he violently abuses her.The story in itself is beautifully filmed and very sad, so be prepared. The acting? There were so many unspoken words, it was hard to tell. But maybe words weren't needed to tell me that this was one of the saddest movies I've ever seen, and the ending was inconclusive.

Capable hands creating palpable film
This movie was a gem of a find! The actors were very careful with the material, I mean that in the best possible way. It didn't do what most teen oriented dramas often fall victim to, which is overload the audience with schmaltzy love scenes and a happily ever after wrapped up in a neat bow. Also worth noting, was the lack of technology displayed in the film. I honestly cannot remember seeing a single character texting or using a computer, which works to its advantage, since in doing this, the film is not restricted to a certain decade. Anyone can place themselves in Davina's "fairy tale".

A dreamy, surrealistic, and very unfulfilling movie with a very lovely, enchanting Natalia Dyer
The unicorn symbolism is linked to purity, freedom, gentleness, virginity, innocence, divinity, and magic. Seeing unicorns in dreams is inevitably a sign of good luck, happiness, and a positive omen. I think the artistic use of unicorns in this movie did reflect that, and the colorful unicorn scenes did bring a sense that something good was going to happen to this lovely teen ager. Except it didn’t. Davina and Sterling are teenagers seeking a way out of their miserable lives. Davina’s mother is a paraplegic and her father deserted his wife and daughter when the woman became disabled. Davina is artistic, absolutely lovely, very intelligent, dreamy, and longing for a way out of her miserable life even though she is still in high school. We know less about Sterling except that he had an abusive father, can be charming at times, but also can be withdrawn, sullen, selfish, and maybe violent, although he never uses violence against her except in that very rough sex scene near the end. These kids just run away to get out of their lives – except neither of them are in any way prepared to take care of themselves or each other. It is just a series of scenes in what appears to be San Benito County, or western Marin county. They romp and frolic, shoplift, have lots of sex, but somehow it misses any real romance between them. We want to empathize with the sweet and strikingly pretty Davina, but are troubled by her simply deserting her crippled mother, and willingness to indulge Sterling’s grifting tendencies and lust. She realizes the sex is not love, that he really does not love her, and they begin to have arguments. He shows a temper, there are signs he could become violent, and he seems unfazed by the fact that they are totally unprepared to build a future together. She, on the other hand is becoming very troubled by it, and losing her sense of romantic adventure. She symbolically kills a unicorn and the movie ends with her on the way back home, somehow found and rescued by her friend Cassidy. Cassidy is also a lovely, sweet girl and the movie could have been improved if they could have made her role larger. I don’t know what we were expected to take away from this movie. There is no ending where Davina has some kind of epiphany realizing she is not ready to strike off in search of her future, no apologies to Mom, no message of what was accomplished or learned by her, except that unicorns are perhaps harder to come by than she wishes. It just ends, leaving us wondering what was it all about. I give it two stars, primarily because of the acting of Natalia Dyer, and because I love that countryside, and have spent years enjoying motorcycle rides through it. But it was just kind of a dreamy, surrealistic experience which left me totally unsatisfied.

Not for the faint of heart
You need to be mentally prepared as a woman to watch this movie. The realistic script and the long silences are something that puts you through many emotions all in one go. Definitely something all sad indie film watchers would need to see.

Not Great, But Definitely Not Bad
It's a 3.5, but I'm rounding up to 4 for the effort that obviously went into this. First of all, the visuals are stunning. The director seemed to be going for a Terrence Malick feel, and she did a great job towards achieving it. But what really elevates the film was the performance by the lead, Natalia Dyer. She's fantastic, and easily as talented as a Brie Larson or Shailene Woodley (who are exceptionally talented). I would say if you enjoy movies like "Room" that are brutally honest character depictions, you'll enjoy this movie.
