The Untold Story
P**S
Did anyone get the number of that truck?
The first thing I should tell you folks is that I'm no stranger when it comes to either unusual or extreme cinema. Just to give you an example of some of the films in my DVD collection, there is: Inferno of Torture, Tag, Cruising, The Witch who came in from the Sea, A woman's torment, I spit on your grave along with all of its subsequent sequels, 7 Days, Thriller, a cruel Picture, Fair Game, and Teeth. Now, with that in mind, all I can say is, "Land sakes, what the hell did I just watch?!"This movie starts out almost like it's going to be some zany, Chinese, slapstick comedy. Basically, you have this group of cops who act like childish cartoon characters. The one female police officer dresses in less than flattering military fatigues while also sporting a boy's hairdo. Being how she is on the thin side to boot, the men she works with go out of their way to treat her like she's an asexual stick-figure. (I found her really cute myself.) Meanwhile, the head honcho comes to the precinct with hookers - and I mean hookers-plural - hanging on his arms. As crazy as it sounds to have a lead cop character giving tours of the precinct to hookers, it gets more ridiculous when the other male cops see these scantily clad pole dancers. As soon as they get a glimpse of leg or cleavage, they make faces like they just got hit over the head by mallets. This level of goofiness with the cop characters is so pervasive that even when they discover gruesome body parts, the smell of decomposing flesh becomes the punchline of a joke. Yet, right around the same time you're thinking, I hope this isn't going to be some quirky, Jackie Chan, Police Story styled comedy, the villain in this film - who also acts like a cartoonish buffoon - pulls the rug right out from under your feet. What he commits are acts of rape and mass murder at such an extreme level, that had an American director dared to depict these same images, there would be dozens of outraged groups calling for their immediate arrest. Between the nudity level of the rape scene and the taboo carnage of the murders, I stared at the TV screen the same way the male cops stared at the hookers, like I was the one who got hit on the head by a mallet!Yes-sir-re, Bob, talk about the elephant in the DVD collection. I really don't know how to rate this film, or what to compare it to, or even if it's a good picture. But I do know that the next time I have some poor, unsuspecting slob over that I want to mess with, I'm throwing this crazy thing on and pressing play.

Very grim Hong Kong movie!
Wong Chi Hang (Anthony Wong) is the owner and chef of a restraunt called "The Eight Immortals Restraunt" that serve the finest dumplings in town. But what the costumers don't know is that the meat inside the dumplings are made from cooked human remains that Wong murdered, a police officer (Danny Lee) suspects something is wrong and investigate who is behind these awful murders that have been happening recently.Based on actual events in Hong Kong and Macaou, this brutal and grisly horror comedy drama is one of international cinema's most violent movies ever. The performances by the actors like Hard Boiled's Anthony Wong are very good as he perfectly plays the cold blooded killer and there's scenes of shocking violence and realistic gore that maybe a little difficult to watch especially a whole family with the kids getting slaughtered and of course a graphic rape sequence you won't forget. There is some dark comical moments to make the film a little more sleazier, it's not for the faint hearted but it is an interesting study of an actual murderer. This DVD has good picture and decent sound with the original Mandarian language with English Subtitles, an audio commentary from the director, cast and Crew Bios, and trailers. Also recommended: "Funny Games", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series with 2003 remake and The Beginning", "Maniac (1980)", "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", "The Driller Killer", "Perfect Blue", "Basic Instinct", "Men Behind The Sun", "Wolf Creek", "Ichi The Killer", "Battle Royale", "Kill Bill Vol. 1", "The Toxic Avenger", "Bloodsucking Freaks", "Saw Quadrilogy", "Hostel 1 & 2", "Cannibal Ferox", "The Devil's Rejects", "High Tension", "Intruder", "Pieces", "Jungle Holocaust (a.k.a. For those of a nervous disposition, the story should remain 'Untold'!
I read about 'The Untold Story' or 'Bunman' (as it's also known) in an article for 'The 20 most disgusting films of all time' and, intrigued by a synopsis that included the words 'Human Pork Buns', thought I'd give it a go.I settled for a second hand, uncut, subtitled disc of the film, which was made in Hong Kong in 1993, and after putting it in the player, was instantly hooked by an opening scene which - following a brutal scuffle between two men - culminates in the realistic looking torching of Wong's first victim.Fast forward a few years and the story relocates from Hong Kong to a beach in Macau, China where two young children discover a plastic sack containing decomposing body parts buried beneath the sand.Cue the introduction of the comedy cop ensemble and a moment of light relief as the 3 man, 1 women team bicker over who should retrieve the stinking appendages from the beach for further analysis.Following some hilarious, sexist dialogue (which probably didn't translate very well from Cantonese to English!) it falls to the female rookie Bo (Emily Kwan) to do the deed just as her boss Inspector Lee (Danny Lee) arrives on the scene with the first in a succession of hookers! (Cue more sexist dialogue as the male cops ogle the seductive slapper). After some buffoonish flirting at the police station the team eventually discover the identity of the female victim - by fingerprinting the decomposing hand - and head off to The Eight Immortals restaurant to question the new owner (Wong) about the wherabouts of the previous owners.Unbeknown to them but graphically presented to us in a stomach churning scene moments earlier, Wong has just despatched a male employee who accused him of cheating at Mah-Jong and has used his flesh to fill a batch of barbecue pork buns which prove to be a hit with the customers.Following some unproductive questioning by the police, Wong takes out his frustrations on an attractive waitress (who let slip the arrival of numerous letters from Hong Kong addressed to the previous owners) by subjecting her to a brutal rape and eventual death by chopsticks! It turns out that the previous owners brother is in prison and after collating enough evidence to send Wong there, the film becomes a prison drama for it's last half hour with some shocking retribution scenes, including beating, urinating and an attempted suicide. If you can stick with it to the final scene, we eventually get the 'Untold Story' which is even more shocking than anything that has gone before!Directed by Herman Yau the film won Anthony Wong an award at the 13th Hong Kong Film Awards for his cold and chilling portrayal of the sadistic murderer and although interspersed with some black humour and comic moments, the film cannot escape from it's dark subject matter which was based on a true story.

Pretty much what you would expect
Pretty much what you would expect. Killing children is not necessary a put off, but there has to be a damn good reason. No here, this is just unpleasant. Well made though, hence the two stars.
