I'm a professional development teaching book geek (I have bookshelves-full), and this book is one of the best I have found. I feel like this is a more teacher-friendly, "I'm-not-a-superhero" version of Lucy Calkins' Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop books. I LOVE that the lessons are integrated, so that your reading and writing (and speaking and listening and language!) lessons tie together. The lessons are written in concise, natural language and feel simultaneously rigorous and doable. It includes student samples to help with assessment, as well as to use for mentor texts. It addresses the Common Core State Standards in authentic, developmentally-appropriate ways, which is huge to me, especially for primary students. I can't wait to use it!

My staff loves this text. It is an incredible support to those who are looking for standards-based questions, lessons, and exemplars to support writing instruction. I wish I had this text years ago--would've elevated us to the next level so much faster. There are some digital tools that you have access to as well that may come in handy.

Amazing Resource
Looking for a way to raise the rigor in your classroom, here it is. Janiel's knowledge of the core and obvious expertise teaching young students combine to make this a powerful resource for instruction. I love how the spiral binding allows the book to lay flat on my desk while I'm designing instruction. The instructional activities and example of teacher think aloud are phenomenal.
