About a handsome young soccer player Jake Graham who believes he is going insane, unable to shake the feeling of being stalked by something, by someone.

In the real world, this kid would've shared his harassment with friends.
If college kids were being targeted, I would think the students would be informed about these "smiley face killings". They would have been told to be on the lookout and stay alert. The ending just lost me. I wanted to know how this poor guys friends felt after they found out he was a victim. They only shared with us what they thought after he disappeared. I wanted to know how their feelings changed once they knew he wasn't delusional or crazy.

Long-Winded Waste of Time
If you want to watch a movie in which the first half is a very long-winded character development, and then a very depressing slow last half, this movie is for you.I was like "oh, they are spending all this time letting us get to know the protagonist because somehow it will become important later." Nope, it's just a waste of time. Then there are all the scenes in the last half where you think obviously the tides will turn. Nope, apparently a man with a shotgun already aimed in the general direction is far too dim-witted to recognize a person walking into a store with a weird cloak on and a pistol in his hand. There were so many other events in this movie such as the other victims, and the idea that apparently no one in this thriving city had CCTV that make this movie utterly unbelievable. Then I read into the history of the "based on actual events" part of the movie. The only thing that really ties any of these murders together was that they ended up in the water after a party, whether it was a day or months later. The last death accredited to this killer had a 17 year span between the last one. This movie basically took the idea of "killer who leaves a smiley face where he dumps the bodies" and ran with that, the film has no other real basis in reality other than a few details. I can almost never give a movie a high rating when they use "Based on a true story" and then use almost nothing of the actual truth in it. It'd be like me saying this dinner is "based on a really good steak dinner" and then serving SPAM carved out in the shape of a T-Bone.

I actually liked it
Sure it’s a bit slow, and the characters choices are frustrating, but are they really that unrealistic? I’ve known people just like the lead in this film, mental issues, communication problems, he is actually quite realistic. If you can stick to the end, it definitely picks up its pace and is quite disturbing in several scenes.Great cinematography, good acting, and incredible soundtrack. Overall I was quite surprised.

BIG NAMES BIG WASTE OF TIME
Big Name writer and producer had me thinking potential creepiness but soon almost becomes a parody of slasher flicks with killer(s) walking around in all black hooded outfits with hammers and later guns. Excited to see Crispin Glover name? He had ZERO dialog and little screen time playing his typical character he's paid for.Sadly movie says based on real events but the ending gives NO sort of closure to the tragedy that goes down.

Indie Moreso Than Mainstream
First let me say it's hard to rate on a 5 scale, so I say it's a 7/10.Overall, I think Smiley is a decent film. It's definitely more of a Indie film than a Lionsgate film, but I'm glad they brought it on during Covid. Personally, I love Indies, so I found the silence to be intriguing because as the audience, you got to connect the pieces and almost write your own story while seeing it flourish; however, I do think a bit more dialogue would have been helpful. At times, profantiy was overused, but I wouldn't say it took away from the film. Ronen Rubinstein portrayed the progression of a paranoid, stressed college student to a T. Without saying much, the audience is clearly able to see what Rubinstein wanted to execute and he executed it well. Especially the last 15 minutes! That's what going to get ya! I know it's based on a theory, but there was an element that I found surprising, so that most definitly helped the film. The score gave me Stranger Things vibes, which is a plus. The overall take away from this rating is that this is not your It or Shining, Smiley is Indie and Indie is a wonderful materpiece in itself. The reason I ranked it a 7 was do to the lack of dialogue and what dialogue there was, some of it wasn't necessarily substantial or it was repetitive. Yet, the facial acting was strong and spoke to the camera, so it balances out. Give Smiley a chance; I do think it's a good watch!

No real excitement until the end, and that was anticlimactic: A FEW SLIGHT SPOILERS
As far as serial killer movies go, there are vastly better ones. As far as true stories go, this one is so far off base I wouldn't even consider it based on the original murders. And what is up with that Galiel bit? I did not enjoy this movie, it felt like I wasted an hour and a half of my life watching it. Also, going in front of a reporter's camera and speaking ill of someone makes you the worst kind of person. I hated those people at the end. They didn't deserve him in their lives.

Lighting is so dark, took over an hour for something to happen
This wasn't what I expected. Most of the movie was filmed in a dark setting that I could hardly see/make out what was going on. It could be because they don't know what happened to the victims during the time of abduction. I heard about the Smiley Face serial killing recently, and don't know anything about it. I just did some online searches and it appears that this is theory. It appears that these cases have not been solved, and the details of what happened in the 40 days of abduction is unknown. Watch the videos online that covers several similar cases, rather than spending almost 2 hours watching this that cover only 1 case.

Different
I tend to like movies that go outside the box. Great cast.
