good size (easy to see)
Bought this based mainly on price (about half the price of competitors), and was very pleasantly surprised. Just finished 5 days in the Everglades, and now would never go without a deck compass, it's really a revelation how well you can track location and heading compared to carrying a hiking compass.High-quality (feels solid), "settles" instantly (well damped), good size (easy to see), secure attachment, and exactly matched the readings from our hiking compasses. To address a few of the negative reviews:- I can't speak to the leakage/longevity issue. Haven't had any trouble, but then I've only had the compass a few months. Some of the complaints were about physical abuse that could damage any compass though. You should have a backup in the form of a hiking compass at least. Next time I go I will make sure someone else in our group has one of these as well, they are that useful. And sure, if you can afford it, go with a $70 compass - but if the extra cost would stop you from geting one - go with this one for sure - don't go without in either case.- One person complained that the readout of the compass is "backwards." Actually this is genius and super-intuitive. When you are pointed North and you look at the compass, it reads "North" (which does mean that the N is actually pointed South - towards you, but believe me, that's what you want. And if you want to see a "normal" compass, lean forward and look at the compass from the top - there's your "standard" compass.- Not illuminated (keeps it simpler), so bring a headlamp with a red light so you can see your compass and chart in the dark.- I found the cables and clips to be very snug and secure and not slip at all. And on my kayak at least, I wanted the compass as close to the cockpit as possible, so the attachment was right where the deck lines anchor to the boat, and so didn't make them appreciably tighter or less useful for rescue.

Great Value for a Temporary Compass
The compass is large enough to read from 5 feet away. It pointed the same direction as my $300 Brunton Pocket Transit. The straps are small but definitely strong enough to keep it securely attached to my perimeter lines. The rubber base keeps it from moving around on the deck.It doesn't have a light; however, I bought a small waterproof coin cell operated LED that fits under the compass, inside the rubber base. It illuminatesit perfectly - not to bright, not too dim.I keep it there and will turn it on if I'm caught after sunset.I would definitely buy this one again, and wholeheartedly recommend it.

Good compass.
This compass mounts securely to the deck lines on my kayak with straps and buckles. It has a wide base and seems stable. It has a pretty visible direction marker and is easy to read. Compared with a couple of other compasses, it appears to be accurate. I haven't tried it on the water yet because it's been too cold to go kayaking. I also ordered another deck compass that attaches with bungee cords, but I sent it back because this one mounted much more securely and seemed more durable.

A sturdy, secure compass
Wanted a compass I could strap to the top of my kayak, and remove during transport. This compass has sturdy clips & straps, accurate readout, and a low profile on your deck. I secure it around the existing straps on my deck and it stays put. Always rinse it thoroughly after every excursion. Good product.UPDATE 4/11/22: Many trips later, in both fresh and saltwater, this compass (along with its housing, base, buckles and straps) continues to hold up very well. The straps haven't bleached and even a glancing blow or two from my paddle blades haven't scuffed the housing. The straps stay tight, the base is solid, and removing it is easy. Still 5 stars. I would buy this compass again.

Quality compass at a reasonable price
Mounts easily to my kayak. Easy to read from several feet away. Helps me keep my desired bearing. What’s not to like?

Great for paragliding too
I use this for paragliding - navigation while in clouds or if gps goes out. I tie it to my leg. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I’m not overly impressed with the buckles but they probably work best for their intended purpose.

Super Helpful
New to kayaking and bought a used kraft. Geared up following other gear lists and selected this compass. Super easy to install and sits well on the deck, double secured with the bungees already there. Super easy to read and helpful to generally orient when on the river. Helpful for selecting where to set up camp to be the most east-facing on a recent 186-mile river trip. Couldn't recommend more highly. The only negative is that it's probably not the lightest...not my focus in this sport and with my current set-up.

Awesome visibility.
This works great on my Black Tip DPV. Had it down to around 60 feet so far and it is easy to read and follow. Highly recommend.

Quality compass!
Great product! Works perfectly after a few uses and is just such a great addition to the deck of my kayak. It’s pretty rugged and can take a punch so if you want to be able to navigate without using google maps, by all means buy this!

Excellent compass
Bought to attach to my SCUBA DPV (dive propulsion vehicle, a.k.a 'scooter'). Works perfectly underwater. It's large and very easy to read even in dim light.
