Product Description Join in the adventures of the quirky Yamada family -- from the hilarious to the touching -- brilliantly presented in a unique, visually striking comic strip style. Takashi Yamada and his wacky wife Matsuko, who has no talent for housework, navigate their way through the ups and downs of work, marriage, and family life with a sharp-tongued grandmother who lives with them, a teenage son who wishes he had cooler parents, and a pesty daughter whose loud voice is unusual for someone so small. Even the family dog has issues! Experience the little victories in life with MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS -- featuring the voice talents of comedic stars Jim Belushi and Molly Shannon.~(c) 1999 Hisaichi Ishii · Hatake Jimusho · GNHB ~ .com Although it's technically a feature film, Isao Takahata's My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) plays like a series of comedy sketches or sitcom episodes. The Tokyo household of Takashi and Matsuko Yamada includes their son and daughter, Noboru and Nonoko, Matsuko's cranky mother Shige, and their lumpish dog. Stolidly middle-income and middle-class, the Yamadas have a family life that falls somewhere between Married... with Children and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Affectionate but undemonstrative, they rarely face crises more challenging than a lost umbrella or what to have for dinner. But they manage to find (or create) drama within their humdrum existence: the struggle for the TV remote becomes a stylized battle that spoofs karate matches; when a girl calls Noboru, his mother and grandmother cling to him like remoras. Many of the Yamadas' adventures end with an elegant haiku. Does Basho's "How cruel, a grasshopper trapped under a warrior's helmet" really apply to Takashi Yamada? He thinks it does. Much of the film's charm comes from the loose, cartoony style that suggests pencil lines and watercolor washes. (Rated PG, Parental Guidance Suggested: Mild thematic elements) --Charles Solomon

Studio Ghibli is the best!
This movie is basically a bunch of shorts put together one after the other, but it's super cute to watch this family live a normal life. It's not fantastical at all, but there's a beauty to watching people just live and be themselves.

An excellent Anime with lots of humorous skits & lots of charm.
My Neighbors The Yamadas is a very good anime from the late great Isao Takahata (also known for "Grave of the Fireflies" & "Only Yesterday" among others is a very humorous & charming anime movie with different skits revolving around the Yamada family, including the parents, a son & daughter & a live-in Grandmother, much like many families in Japanese culture. It is a very lighthearted & feel good anime, very unlike "Grave of the Fireflies". It has a very universal appeal that most any family, no matter the culture can relate to. Don't let the simplistic & sketch-like artwork deter you from checking this anime out. There is much lighthearted humor & charm here to make it a classic & must own for any Studio Ghibli fan! 😊👍

A beautiful portrait of life's lessons
For those that have enjoyed other Studio Ghibli feature length films you should first note that this is far from the same style of art and story structure, but carries with it the same heart warming feelings. Going into my first viewing of this, I was not previously aware of the dramatic difference in style, as well as the fact that instead of one continuous stream of storyline it is broken up into nine short stories or vignettes of the Yamada's day-to-day life. These are done in a sketchy water-color style that invokes an essence of traditional Japanese art that I found rather beautiful and each episode is caped off with a traditional haiku (by Basho or Buson). These short stories of the Yamada family shows us how sticking together through the rougher trials of life we are able to overcome anything and that we should never forget that our family and the ones we love are really the most important part of life. Some of these lessons shown within a traditional middle-class Japanese family might be initially lost on those outside of Japan, but if given a chance you will see how these core family values are really an integral part of families the world over. You might not get all the haiku poetry or references to some Japanese folk-lore, but I believe these stories are easy to relate to for anyone who has ever known a hard working father like Takashi, a loving mother like Matsuko, or has ever experienced the quarrels between a brother and sister like Noboru and Nonoko, who are all backed by Matsuko's mother, Shige, who like many grandparents are the real glue that holds a family all together.

You have to know Japanese culture to understand the movie
This movie brings back so many memories. Since watching it the first time, I will always remember the main theme, "一人ぼっちは止めた", and I used to be able to sing it. I still catch myself humming a few bars to this day.To the disappointed reviewers: You need someone who has insight into the culture that created this movie because it about "every day" life with family. I watched this with an exchange-student, roommate of mine who explained a lot of the Japanese culture, the nuances about the movie, the language used and small jibs and jabs at humor. With this move and with him, I learned a lot about Japanese culture as a result.Compare to how I saw it over 20 years ago, in SD on a CRT, they really cleaned it up. I'm going to watch it subbed for good old, time's sake, and then, watch with the English dub.

Only for people who know Japanese culture
The movie itself it about the typical 'every day life' of a Japanese family. Be warned: If you don't know something about it, you may become bored after a short time. The movie is divided into different chapters about the protagonists, featuring all members of the family. The animation style is IMO far away from the 'typical Anime style', yet it is still Anime. The whole movie is drawn in the same style like shown on the cover, sparse pencil strokes, very clean backgrounds and pastel colors. The movie is very quiet and features sequences where nothing happens but portrays the typical life of a Japanese family and is quite funny for those who know something about Japanese life - I am married with a Japanese and lived there, so I know some ;-)The movie is far away from Myazaki's rich, colorful and fantasy movies. So, please don't expect something like this. But the movie has it's own unique style and is entertaining. Recommended to watch with somebody who knows something about Japanese culture.

Non-Ghibli Ghibli (yes, it’s a good thing)
I have an unpopular opinion:Spirited Away is such a moving film. Nausicaa is a visual masterpiece. Pom Poko is charming beyond words, and so much fun. My Neighbor Totoro is a mesmerizing vision. And My Neighbors, the Yamadas is my favorite Studio Ghibli movie of all time.A good portion of what sets Yamadas apart from other Ghibli films, is it is decidedly un-Ghibli. A studio known for grand storytelling, captivating characters, and stunning visual imagery...adapted a gag manga to the big screen. And they did a fine job, indeed. There is no great, overlying story, just slice of life bits of an odd family, not quite what you’d call functional entirely, but not completely off the rails. They come off as genuinely human, like most Ghibli characters (even the ones that are not—looking at you, Calcifer), but UNlike many of their other films, they get to be human. Not on some grand adventure, but losing a child in a department store, or getting a girlfriend. On actual human stuff we can more easily relate to, with a sense of humor.Come for the Ghibli quality, stay because it’s enjoyable to defy expectations sometimes. And who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh?

Extremely hilarious and relatable awesome for families of all ages
I checked out this movie just because Isao Takahata directed it and also because it was a failure from it's box office release making it underappreciated and I have to say this is without a question the funniest Ghibli movie I've ever seen I fall over with laughter every time I watch it and this is also what is called a slice of life story so there are some lessons that can be learned from this classical delight as they are relatable to everyday situations the only cautions I'll give about this movie is that it can be bit thematic and that unlike most Ghibli films this one isn't done like a one way story there's actually a bunch of episodic style stories and no direct plot and the tie back to the thematic elements of this is in one of the stories "spoiler alert so this is your warning" one character I won't say who visits somebody in the hospital and then questions why she's in the hospital and then she starts crying at which point we don't even need to be told but the said person is dying but beyond this the movie is extremely hilarious and worth every penny and each story is delivered excellently courtesy of now deceased famous Disney voice actor David Ogden Stiers
