It is annoying that it has to have batteries rather that plugging into the wall, but it is JUST like it is in the picture and seems to be lasting, so you get what you pay for. If your child gets bored quickly, I would suggest investing in a slightly more versatile set.

NOTE THAT for $40-$55, you'll most likely get the basic, much smaller, figure 8 model, as I did (even if the product photo you are looking at is of the large, looping model - Amazon was great at taking care of my issue). I, an adult, did set up, tested and put away the basic model, and felt that it's a well built toy. If your cars are going off the track, you are going too fast and/or have not adjusted the little prong on the bottom of the car. The figure 8 model is plain boring but gave me the slot car bug to buy a much bigger set.

Gift for my grandson

My son was so surprised to see the Super Mario & Wario characters race around the track. Lot's of laughs & fun! The cars are really cool & they go pretty fast around the track. So the hand controller is the key. My son has out grown it now but we've had yrs. of fun.

This product is cheaply made. The holes holding the struts broke every time I put one in. The directions are all pictures (without much detail) and do nothing for a person like me who does better at reading them than trying to decipher a poorly printed picture. Everything falls apart if you move it just a little bit. WORST TOY EVER!
