Cloisonné Enameling and Jewelry Making

Far more than a book on the art of enameling
While this is an older book and would do well to release a newer updated edition, this is a must for any aspiring enamellist. Covered in this book is everything from a basic introduction to working with enamels in cloisonné to how to create your own bails and settings for your pieces. It's an amazing resource for anyone who wants to get into this art form and a good investment. The only things that are outdated are the enamel numbers/colors referenced in the projects (which is admittedly somewhat disappointing) as some of the suppliers have either merged with other companies or gone out of business all together. Thompson is still around but has since changed their enamel numbers and the names of most of their colors since the this book was published. Of course, it's not hard to find replacement colors with a little imagination so it's a minor problem and overall insignificant in comparison to the wealth of information you'll find here. You'll enjoy the step by step projects provided for cloisonné and for learning to do some of the more advanced shading that adds depth and interest to your pieces.

Just what I needed.
Really nice book. The pictures are incredible. I am too use to the old instruction books I guess, with their rotten illustrations and photos. I've read half of the 1st chapter and see this is going to be a long process for me. But, it looks to be fun and just what I was hoping to learn. Thanks.

not as good as it should be
I would not recomend this book. The information that is in it is good. And it's nice that is has some projects to try, but there is nothing for a nonbeginer in this book. I've taken a few cloisonne classes, but they are hard to find I wanted to know more. I have had some problems and I hoped I could find answers to them in this book. There is no troubleshooting section, no comments even on how to fix the projects if something goes wrong. If your interest is anything other than curiosity for cloisonne, if you want to actually learn how to do this, DON'T bother geting this book.

You get more than the title suggests.
This book is packed with information, not just about enamelling but also about a surprisingly large number of other aspects of silverwork. Well worth getting. I was just surprised that a book about enamelling, which really is all about colour, has black and white photos rather than colour ones.

Thorough detail and information, but it's unfortunate that the photos are in B&W. Enameling is all about adding colour to metal and so it's unfortunate that the photos weren't done in colour at the time of the first printing of this book.
