Then Sings My Soul, Book 2: 150 of the World's Greatest Hymn Stories

I play the keyboards for a local church, and many people ask me about hymn origins. There are two books in this series. Both books go into hymn favorites and tells the story of their inception or intention. The print is easy to read. It is a paperback binding, but the cover is of thick card stock, helping the book to age nicely. The edges of the paper are torn in this volume. You might need to look closely at the picture before ordering if you want to be sure you have the pretty torn edges. This was quite inexpensive. I would have preferred this to be available in a Kindle download. Each hymn has a score ( intermediate level) and a story. The authors have tried to depict the history and anything particular or strange that can be noted. Acquiring more information about hymns both brings them to life for me, but certainly keeps congregates interested in the church’s music.

I have book 1 and now have this Book 2. I wanted this one as it has my favorite hymn in it ... Be Still My Soul. My sister and I were both looking through it and she found some of her favorite hymns too. It is wonderful to read about the background on each hymn, the inspiration behind it and the circumstances at the time that pulled such beautiful heart rendering music forth. I feel so much music today is directed at the person and how they feel and not at the mightiness of intervention of God. These songs take me back to my roots and songs we sang in church each Sunday as I was growing up.

The book is great but damaged due to Amazon now sending books in envelopes. I will order from the author’s website from now on. These books were a 90th birthday gift for my mother. Robert J Morgan’s books are all wonderful. I ordered the same for my aunt age 92 and my youngest son.

I highly recommend this book. The stories make the songs even more meaningful.

Several years ago I bought Volume 1 in this series. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I realized he had written more! I was THRILLED!!! I enjoyed the first volume so much. This book is worth the price, just to find out the story behind the hymn, 'Little Brown Church in the Vale'. What an AMAZING story behind it's writing!Reading the story behind why the hymns were written puts so much more meaning into the song itself. I can't wait to buy Volume 3 and the Holiday Edition as well! I just love the old-time hymns and I am working toward diligently teaching them to my home-schooled children (as we RARELY sing hymns in the Church we are now attending). This book is helping in our musical as well as historical studies! You will not regret buying this book!

We do a song background every other week on Sunday night in our church services. This book comes in handy finding information about many of our favorite hymns!

It is a good addition to the first book. The first book is superior to this one, and the fact that there are more backstory to each hymn. This book so far has some of the authors take on the hymn, where I would rather just have the history of why the hymn was written.I recommend this for anyone who wants to know about hymns, and adding to your first books collection.

Robert Morgan's Then Sings My Soul series has proved to be very inspirational, and I also got a set for my sister. We both use it as part of our devotional time. There is so much to be learned from the old hymns. As one of my friends says, the old hymns aren't 9-11 song: 9 words sung over 11 times. They have depth to them and can bring so much comfort and knowledge in growing faith.

WOW! Truly brings makes one much more appreciative of the words and the authors who penned them when you know what truly brought the songs into reality! This book is a little gem, and should somehow be used in regular worship services (where hymns are still being sung), to let the congregation know that the God who was faithful in times of trials and testing is still the same God today! He is just as capable and faithful to His dear children now, as He was then!
