The Stranger

Chris Van Allsberg captures the charm of Jack Frost with the right amount of intrigue and information. His illustrations are wonder-full.

This book arrived today, and even though the text is in good shape, the cover is not.The cover was torn almost in half, along with various tears in it. I don't think the sellershould have claimed that it was in "very good" condition...As to the content of thebook I would say it's one of Chris Van Allsburg's least satisfying entries into his bodyof work since it lacks a clear resolution. Other than that, his paintings are on a parwith his other outstanding books.

I used this book to teach inferencing to my second graders. I would suggest reading poems about Jack Frost before using this for inferencing. My kids loved it and after learning who "the stranger" was, begged to read it again. It would make a great addition to any teachers classroom library!

I love this book! Kids barely hear of Jack Frost now, so this is a great conversation starter! My class loved it!

I read this story for the first time a few weeks ago. The book is so interesting - I thought that the ending might be different depending what is inferred from the story. So I asked my 15 and 17 year old to read it, and my husband. Each took something different from the story and made their own inferences. Since then I have read it to a class made up of 3,4, and 5th graders they all loved it and all made their own conclusion as to who the stranger is...

As with "The Wreck of the Zephyr" and "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick", "The Stranger" is a very compelling and thought-provoking story for kids, one they will probably remember for their entire lives and would want to share with their own children.

Excellent book by Chris Van Allsburg. If you like cliff hangers and mysteries, this is a great book for you. As a teacher, I use it first for the joy of reading it, and next, to teach how to make inferences and draw conclusions. These are difficult concepts for students and The Stranger provides a most interesting context to do so through text and pictures.

This book is great to teach inferencing and predictions. My students loved this book!

My wife is a school teacher and has used this and the related websites for many of her recent lessons. She speaks very highly of it and says it's one of the best books she's come across in over 30 years of teaching.

Excellent visuals, beautiful drawings and a easy to understand story with a twist. My son loves it. Highly recommended.
