A Smart Sleep HatThe Sleep Hat is the first at home sleep device that monitors your brainwaves in real time and uses a biofeedback loop to help you fall asleep quickly through the use of specially engineered binaural beats. The Sleep Hat is unique from other sleep aids in that it works with your brain's natural structure to slow your brain down and guide you to sleep. How it worksThe hat incorporates Virtual Hammock Technology invented by Dr. Michael Larson (a Mechanical Engineering professor with a Ph.D. from M.I.T.). This technology induces a rhythmic sensation within the brain by utilizing the natural workings of the brains auditory center. Specialized nerves hard-wired in the part of our brain stem called the medial superior olive (MSO) get excited when they are stimulated by signals arriving from our two ears. The rhythmic pulse you hear when wearing the Sleep Hat is actually your brain deciphering the difference in frequency between the two tones that are played into either ear. The Sleep Hat is an all-natural, homeopathic sleep device that takes advantage of cutting edge sleep technology. Unlike sleep trackers, that simply report how poorly you slept, the Sleep Hat is the first sleep gadget to actively help you sleep. Components and AdvantagesThe hat is made of a stretchable and breathable fabric (85% Nylon, 15% Spandex) with built-in sensors and hi-fidelity speakers. The Sleep Hat can be worn with most CPAP masks. The Sleep Hat is the first commercially available sleep device that uses brainwave activity in a biofeedback system to actively help you sleep. The Sleep Hat has been featured on Engadget, Science Dump, Slash Gear and Gadget review. The Sleep Hat was selected as a semi-finalist at the Last Gadget Standing competition at CES Vegas 2015.Please note: The Sleep Hat is not a medical device or a clinical intervention of any kind.

Great Idea - Badly Flawed Design
Hate to leave a scathing review because the creators described in the product description appear to be decent people who have tried to create a solution to insomnia. But this thing is just flawed in so many ways. Among them:- The band around the edge cuts into my forehead and the tender area at the back of my neck - no matter how I adjust it.- The volume at its loudest is too low to drown out even the quiet hum of traffic outside, not to mention louder noises in the house, or the sound of snoring. The hammock sound, in fact, strangely, seems almost to *magnify* outside sounds, accentuate them in some weird way.- I have long hair - the hat either presses it against my neck which is itchy and uncomfortable through the night, or, I'd have to stuff all my hair inside, which makes the hat even tighter and makes adjustment necessary throughout the night in order to not have hair blocking speakers or sensors.- The hat is not washable! I have dry hair, so don't have to shampoo as frequently as some people in order to keep my hair clean and fresh. I can only imagine how awful this hat will smell (and how full of bacteria and mites!) on hair that is oily, or even worse, on a balding scalp. Yuk!- The speakers are supposed to be rearranged for comfort after the sensors are put in place. That's hard to accomplish, and then they move around in the pocket - away from your ear drum.I'm a chronic insommniac so had high hopes for this thing ... but it's just not designed well yet. I hope these folks will keep working on it, it seems like a good idea.

It really works for me
Wow. This thing is amazing. I have had increasing trouble with waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble getting back to sleep. This had gotten to the point that I needed sleep medication in the night almost every night. I've tried melatonin, exercise, no caffeine, other biofeedback techniques, just about everything. Nothing worked for me.Until Sleep Shepherd. The first night it made a difference. I’ve been wearing it for about 2 weeks now. I put it on when I go to bed. I can feel myself get drowsy. I do still wake up in the night most nights, but it automatically starts again and helps me fall back to sleep within a few minutes. I haven't needed sleep meds since I started using Sleep Shepherd. I am remembering dreams now, which I haven't in a long time. And I just feel more rested during the day. I feel like I’m getting parts of my life back.I was on the border of size medium and large and bought a medium. The medium was a little uncomfortable on my ears so I contacted the company from their website and heard back within a day. They offered several suggestions, one of which was to buy a large, try it, and return the one I didn’t want within 30 days. That has been a good plan. I’m sticking with the size large. I’m not saying their sizing is wrong, more that everyone’s head is different. If you are close to the next size, get the one you think and know you can swap it within 30 days.

Great idea but needs some tweaking for comfort
While I think the Sleep Shepherd is a good idea basically, I think that the execution of the actual product needs some tweaking. The earpieces are very hard and difficult to get to fit into the indentations of my ears. Also the seaming of the headpiece is so thick that it just bites into my skin and my ears. The top flops around a lot. and is distracting for someone with insomnia. If the cap were lighter and the earphones were softer, I think this product would be wonderful. However, as there is more discomfort than help for me, I am returning it while hoping for a lighter and softer version of the product.

Big sleeping change.
I would 5 star the concept. However I purchased this for my wife and both her and I tried using it. I can't say definitively if there are any benefits, we both feel it does help some but the cap itself is pretty warm and it is a very different change from the usual no hat sleeping. The component on top is also hard on the head and flops weird when the cap is not fully down (which doesn't work for smaller heads). Good concept.

May be a good product but not for me.
I read every review of this product. Some were critical others were wonderful. I have not slept well in so long that I was willing to try anything, especially with the assurance of Amazon Prime and free returns. I am having to return the hat because it is simply too small, even though I ordered the largest size. Granted, I have a large head (hat size 7 5/8) but not that large. I tried adjusting the position for a more comfortable fit. I was never able to place the speakers over my ears. The hat was so tight that it gave me a headache within minutes. Needless to say, the hat did not help my sleep. The sound produced by the speakers was higher pitched than I expected, but not annoying. This product may work well if your head is of average size or smaller. My recommendation is to give it a try but order a larger size than you think you need. Good luck. I know that you need some sleep or you would not be reading this.

Save your money
It doesn't work. I hated it the first night and couldn't stand the tone. But I gave it the old college try for a couple more weeks. I learned to tolerate the tone, but the hat is not comfortable and I my head circumference falls right into the the middle of the range for my correct size. The only way it stays on my head the whole night is if the elastic is right over my eyeballs with too much pressure. Otherwise it invariably slides off. It is also too warm for the summer. And I'm sure it is not supposed to be washed; in a few weeks it would get pretty gross. And the night before anything significant, this device is no match for my racing brain and just adds to my misery while staring at the side of my eyelids. It's possible it may have helped me achieve a deeper state of sleep when my mind wasn't racing to begin with. But quite frankly, if there is any relationship between my brain waves and the signal this is putting out, it very well may be the tail wagging the dog. It's going back.
