ForBeast and easiest fix for a worn land on a shaft where an oil seal must ride. I have a Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive. Sooner or later water gets into the u-joint bellows either through a failed u-joint bellows, a failed shift shaft seal, or a failed shift cable bellows. (No one ever tells you to change the shift shaft seals, but they are a common culprit and a wear item with limited life.) When it does the front seal at the top of the drive leg lets water enter the drive, contaminates the drive oil, and pitts the input yoke where the seal has to ride. Provided your u-joints aren't ruined your choice other than to buy a new input yoke which requires a lot of fussy shimming to fit the gears correctly, is to get one of these.The sleeve has a flare on one end that helps install it. The installation tool is included, but you have to cut the end of the tool open so that it will fit down over the shaft and come to bear on the flared part. The flared end goes on first, but in my case the sleeve would still be too long; so start by using this flare but when the sleeve is about as far down as you can get it you peel off this flared out bit like opening an old fashioned sardine can to get the last 1/8 inch or so. Now lots of places tell you how to do that. What hey don't tell you is how your supposed to knock this very thin, delicate sleeve on the rest of the way since the installation flare is gone. The answer is to tap it down with a light hammer and a bit of birch or pine used as a drift using the END GRAIN against the sharp edge of the sleeve. The end grain will (usually) split the wood before it bends over the sleeve. Be gentle. Then polish up the edge with some emery cloth so you don't damage the oil seal when it all goes back together.It all worked like a charm for me. Back on the water for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the time.Shipping was prompt, price was good.
