The Big Dipper (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)

Our first Let's Read and Find Out book - but we will be buying more
My 6 year old daughter and I read this book last night, and she was delighted with it. She immediately wanted to go outside and find the big dipper, but of course it was cloudy last night. The descriptions of the stars was simplistic for young children, but the book really didn't talk down to them. It actually named every star in the Big Dipper. I didn't know their names, and I doubt many people do. It also slightly touches on Ursa Major, the Little Dipper, & the North Star. One of the cool things in the book is that it shows the position of the Big Dipper in the sky for each season. Once again I learned something because it really didn't occur to me that it would be upside down in one season and right side up on another (I'm really not an astronomy person). I would recommend this little book to anyone wanting to foster a love of science in their small children.

What They Said!
As a fan of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Series, I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewers exactly! Not over-reaching in it's instruction for littles (our own is 5), neither is the information dumbed down.Yes, it names all the stars in the Big Dipper. (Good luck pronouncing some!) ;-)Yes, it shows the different positions in the night sky based on season.Yes, it talks about the Little Dipper too, and their being part of bigger constellations, (Ursas Major and Minor).Yes, it explains how to find the Big Dipper.Yes, it explains how to use the Big Dipper to find the North Star.It also goes a little bit into the importance of the North Star for sea-farers.And... yes. Mom and Dad learned a couple of new things, too ;-)This LR&FO Science book does NOT disappoint.

Educational
After reading this, My 5 year old was able to go outside and point out the big and little dipper and even tell his dad more facts about the constellations. But he hasn't asked to read it again like some of his other favorite books.

Nice Book
A tad difficult for my daughter to remain interested in. However, I bet she will love it in about a year.

Great explanation of the big dipper
I liked this book. It is for my son who is five years old. He liked it too. It easily explains the big and little dipper and how to identify them in the sky. I would recommend this book to families. We will refer to this book in the future when we are trying to find the dippers in the sky.

For the little stargazers...
A great book to introduce your little one to stargazing. My 5-year-old is now constantly chatting about the Big dipper and small dipper!

The book
The book I received was old and tattered. It was not expected, and highly disappointed will be an understatement about how our little one felt receiving that. Though it's an starry reading for him, and he was happy with it.
