The email was on the occasion of celebrating this outstanding book by holding a public lecture and book signing on April 24, 2013. Their product illustrates what miracles can be made when good will, collaboration and expertise are combined. Chapter authors are world-renowned experts and leaders in their respective fields.Besides being a celebration of multi-faith Old Cairo, the book is an intellectual delight for scholars, students and laity. It is also the second best thing for those who cannot adventure as tourists in Old Cairo. The book would also make an excellent gift to those interested in Christian, Islamic and Jewish traditions.S. This is an excellent volume from a diversity of religious scholars, art historians, and archaeologists with a combined dozens of years of experience working in the region. I came to this volume as a student in Coptic Studies but what makes this volume unique is that it is relevant for a much broader audience because Old Cairo is a microcosm of the complexities of Egyptian history as seen through one region's diverse religious history. Also notable is that this volume is not merely academic. It is certainly scholarly but it combines this with superb photographs to provide the reader a visual experience as well that is unique and commendable for a university press publication. I fully recommend this volume to students of Egyptian religious history, Coptic scholarship, and art and archaeology.

A beautiful book beautifully photographed. Only two small quibbles about it, the gold lettering on my dust jacket has begun to rub off merely from my fingers holding the book. And also realizing that when the cover says, " Its Fortress, Churches, Synagogue, and Mosque," it literally means ONE fortress, ONE synagogue and ONE Mosque are discussed in the book while five or six different churches are. I don't know if that is because there IS only one mosque and one synagogue in what is considered Old Cairo ,but for a book this size I thought there'd be at least a few more mosques included!

A delicious insatiable banquet of information about one of the world's one-of-a-kind historical sites that encompasses hundreds and hundreds of years and thousands and thousands of stories and events of religious and social struggle of people for their identity, freedom, and religious beliefs with the finger and foot prints of them all engraved all over its walls and alleys illustrated and written by some of the most renowned scholars and experts in the field.

I have known and learned about Old Cairo from this book a great deal and a lot more than what I used to know as an Egyptian who lived in Cairo all his life. This is a very well structured and informative book. Thank you for making such a wonderful publication.

A gorgeous book about the shared history of 3 religions in Old Cairo. Text and photographs are wonderful, a chance to learn more about Egypt. Highly recommend.

英語版のみので日本語版は無い。世界遺産オールドカイロ(旧カイロ)は、もちろんのことカイロの発祥の地でありつつ、意外にもキリスト教の都という事が分かる。Google Mapで見ても、このオールドカイロの辺りだけ多くの古い教会がひしめいている隣に芸術的な墓石が並ぶカトリック教会の墓地が広がっているのが分かるだろう。そしてユダヤ教のベン・エズラ・シナゴーグが教会群に囲まれているのが分かる。それが現在のオールドカイロの姿だ。　このオールドカイロのユダヤ教のベン・エズラ・シナゴーグ(9世紀)の歴史については謎が多い。このシナゴーグの場所は、古くはヘブライ人がここに連れてこられた紀元前600年頃にまで遡るとされる。つまりバビロン捕囚期の以前にまで遡ることになる。列王記下にも記載されている通り、滅亡が近づく南ユダ王国の同盟国であったエジプトに多くが移民したためである。出エジプトの逆パターンである。イザヤ書成立の前である。当然エルサレムの神殿が再建されるより以前である。このあたりからヘブライ人というよりはユダヤ人とオールドカイロのかかわりが強くなってくる。　カイロで何故ユダヤ教やキリスト教と思われた方も多かったと思われるが、ご存知の通りクリスマスの夜にベツレヘムで生まれたイエスは、東方の(三人の)博士の訪問を受けた後、父の聖ヨゼフの夢の中でエジプトに逃れよというお告げによってベツレヘムからエジプトへ脱出する(マタイ2:13)。ヘロデ大王によるヘブライ人(ユダ族)の幼児虐殺(紀元前4年以前)から逃れるためである。当時の一般的なエジプトへのルートである地中海沿いの海の道、つまりガザからシナイ半島の地中海沿岸を通り、ナイルデルタからナイルの上流を目指したとされている。その途中で滞在したのが、紀元前600年頃より既にヘブライ人集落があったオールドカイロ(旧カイロ)の一角、ベンエズラシナゴーグの近隣の洞窟だったとされる。つまり現在知られているベン・エズラ・シナゴーグ(9世紀)の歴史よりも更に1000年以上も古い歴史があることになる。初代教会時代にはここが既に聖家族が訪れたキリスト教の聖地として認められていたのは、聖家族がここゴシェンのベン・エズラ・シナゴーグの場所が当時ヘブライ人の村落があり、むしろ誰であれヘブライ人がエジプトに来るのであれば、この場所に来るのが自然な事として認識されていたからであろう。しかしながら、良く本書を読むと、このベン・エズラ・シナゴーグの場所には、紀元前600年よりも更に古いヘブライの歴史があることが分かる。　現在のこのカイロゲニザとベン・エズラ・シナゴーグがある場所は、赤子だったモーセがファラオによるヘブライ人(12部族)の幼児虐殺から逃れナイル川に葦の籠船に乗せられて浮かべられた場所であり、かつ拾い上げられた場所であると言い伝えられていたとのことである。当時この場所はナイル川の川岸だったとのことである。紀元前600年どころか、紀元前1300年頃の事である。つまりユダヤ教の聖典(旧約聖書)のしかも最初の五書(創世記、出エジプト記、レビ記、民数記、申命記)を書いたモーセの出生にまつわる聖地なのである。つまりソロモン王の神殿建設どころか、トーラー(モーセ五書)、平たく言えば旧約聖書自体が成立する以前からのヘブライ人の聖地ということになる。　これによってこのベン・エズラ・シナゴーグのある場所がヘブライ人の聖地となり、紀元前600年には既にヘブライ人の集落が出来ており、イエスが生まれた時代には、まさにその場所のすぐ近所にイエスとその家族が数日ではあったが滞在した、という事になる。　しかし気づかれたであろうか、モーセがファラオによるヘブライ人(12部族)幼児虐殺から逃れた事と、イエスがヘロデ大王によるヘブライ人(ユダ族)幼児虐殺から逃れたこととが、この場所でオーバーラップしている。そしてモーセを助けた姉のミリアムは、出エジプト記(8:2）のこの個所でヘブライ語で”עלמה”(アルマー：おとめ)と呼ばれている。そしてベツレヘムから逃れてここに滞在したイエスの母マリアの名はヘブライ語ではミリアムであり、いわゆるイザヤ書(7:14)の”עלמה”(アルマー：おとめ)の聖書翻訳上の問題の当事者、二人のマリアが時代を超えてこの場所で交錯する。単なる偶然か、それとも神の奇跡か。現地のベン・エズラ・シナゴーグに行くと、運が良ければ更にこの続きのヒントが聞ける。先ずは本書を頼りにオールドカイロに行ってほしい。なるオールドカイロにはまだまだ謎が多い。

Excellent book, well worth it for someone who is interested in the mediaeval culture of Egypt. If it is Coptic culture that interests you, you will actually need both this book and the Churches of Egypt by the same authors.
