P.S. I Spook You (The Spectral Files Book 1)

Great
Have read a few series of this trope: psychical and cop solving cold cases with mm romance included. This book was a really good version. The main characters were very likeable, the plot was good and the side characters interesting. It was also funny with Rain having a hilarious inner monologue. I thoroughly recommend it,

Couldn't put it down
Minor spoilers in the review. Finally! After all the humdrum, mediocre, LGBT cop procedural novels I have read of late... here is one that was actually worth the read. This book caught my attention from the very first page and kept it virtually start to finish (stopping for food breaks, etc was a chore and honestly, who needs sleep anyway).I loved Rain. His character, his outlook, his self depreciating inner monologue and gradual 180 change as he comes to accept himself and settle into his own skin, so to speak, all made him a character easy to love. His interaction with Danny kept me guessing a lot and was awkward, painful, achingly full of equal parts hope and hopelessness and a whole stack of raw honesty. I loved the realism of it, right up to and including calling each other out for Dr Phil moments or saying No and meaning it, even when they neither of them wanted to accept it. I thought the relationship was incredibly well handled, believable and mature. I didn't feel like I was reading something written by a 16 yr old girl who giggled if a boy walked past.I was a bit iffy about the ghost aspect. I have read some truly awful paranormal novels in the past, but some exceptionally good ones too (Psy-Cop series by JC Price is an excellent example that ghost stories can be good), but I had no idea how this book would pan out. As it turned out, I needn't have worried. It was tasteful, amusing, slightly gruesome and borderline chilling in parts. Again, Rain's relationship with ghosts changes as he does and grows and develops in new and interesting ways. Ethan was my absolute favourite ghost, but a memorable shout out goes to the ghost he encounters in the middle of the night. It was such a short scene, but both amusing and pretty chilling all at the same time. Also, Gladys. She was one sly old fox of a ghost. I liked Gladys. To wrap up my ramblings, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for book 2. Definitely a book I would read again... and possibly even again after that. There just aren't enough well-written cop procedurals and I was very excited to add this to my list of favourites.

Fun
Brilliantly written, witty and hot. This book has it all - the plot, the characters. Seriously good read, I'm putting this author on auto buy. The romance was hot without getting cheap, the plot was great and although you get a hint of who's done it, it's not that you know it well enough to be bored till the end comes and say "I told you so" and "It was so obvious". Characters were entertaining - sweet, but thank God - not too perfect.

A Witty Ghost-Busting Crime Romance!
Having read Harmon's previous books, this was very different, though set in Florida like the others. It was really well written giving a taste of the thick heat & humidity of its setting, contrasted with the sterile FBI life that Rain had chosen. Rain was an appealing character, whose reluctance to accept his 'gift' made complete sense. The life he had chosen (as an FBI agent) contrasted well with carefree hippy-like up-bringing. Also, the break-up of him & Danny also made sense as the story went on.The crime element was well done, though I did guess whodunit quite early on, even the reason why, though this did not detract from the tale, which had some laugh out loud moments due to the witty writing. Loved the guest appearances, especially Ethan, who did make me chuckle a few times. There were a number of loose threads (Danny's sister for one) and the ending did leave hope of a series/revisit.Overall, an excellent read, witty & entertaining without the usual trite paranormal bits, absolutely loved it. Really hope that the author revisits Rain & Danny as there is huge potential there for a series. Highly recommended.

Great Page Turning Gay Romance, Ghosts and Mystery Novel
This was a great story, and one that was on my to-read list for much longer than it should have been. I really enjoyed the concept of the story and then the characters themselves. Rain was discovering the consequences of his new abilities, as well as going home which was clearly the right thing to do. I enjoyed the way Danny showed up for him, even if they weren't going to go anywhere but I would like to have seen more of his family, especially his father as I don't recall meeting him.The mystery was great, and even though I knew he did it early on, it was still a ride to go on.I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and where it all goes.

Fun, snarky PNR
I love a crime to solve; I love a bit of spookiness (OK, a lot of spookiness); I adore a second chance romance with a hint of opposites attract and a broody alpha with past hurts. OK, so this might not quite be the perfect book - there are a couple of issues some readers coming for the crime-solving procedural with a ghostly bonus might get hung up on - but it ticks so many boxes for me I'm more than happy to go along for the ride without those things derailing my enjoyment. All in all, I think P.S. I Spook You is a really entertaining read and has whet my appetite for the rest of the series. It's been on my TBR for such a long time, but I've got a sneaky feeling I'll be binging the rest of the series over the next few days. 4.25*

so good
This is such a good book. Beautifully written, likable characters (both living and dead), fantastic plot line, skillful execution... cannot wait to read the rest in the series. 11/10. Straight into my top 20 favorite books.

amazingly sweet
Honestly I’ve read a couple similar genres but I can honestly say this is one of my favourites! I especially love the Hawaii 5-O references ❤️

Spooktacular
I just very recently found out about this author and The Spectral Files in a Facebook reading group and it is a treasure I am glad I unearthed. This modern romance with paranormal elements had me hook, line and sinker from the 1st chapter. It is brilliantly written with exceptional character development encompassing a creative and captivating storyline that is smart and sublimely spirited. Rain's profession is an FBI Profiler but his side hustle is comedian as he is absolutely hilarious with his quick wit and one-liners. Danny a cold case detective is a bit more regimented but together these two are a centrifugal force. The narrative is the perfect combination of Cold Case Files, Criminal Minds, The Ghost Whisperer and The Notebook. I absolutely loved this book and will be devouring the entire series. S.E. Harmon is now on my must read authors list.

4.5*
Really good story, great characters, really funny moments, lots of action and ghost whispering! I had some minor problems with Rain's actions but that's just me being picky about stuff. It didn't get 5* because I always miss the other side of the story, it being only Rain's point of view made me feel like the story was kinda incomplete. Nothing too bad, again, it's just me being picky 🙃

A paranormal (ghost) romance
Loved this romantic mystery story with a ghost whisperer and his quirky family. Rainstorm's (yes, that's his name !) position at FBI is slightly precarious, due to his recently revealed gift of seeing ghosts. As a results Rain is sent to his hometown to help solve a cold case. There Rain meets Danny, his old ex and the officer in charge of the case, who was perfect for him; but whom Rain walked out on few years back. On top of that, Rain is forced to help solve the various mysteries presented by the different ghosts.Loved this story with its quirky hero and all the colorful minor characters.

Loved the sarcastic, snarky, funny "voice" of Rain
P.S. I spook You was thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the characters; the story was interesting (although that very last part was predictable - rule of thumb: never piss off anyone serving your food, never ingest anything from someone pissed off at you); and the atmosphere was surprisingly (considering the subject matter) light and angst free. The story is told from the perspective of FBI agent Rain Christiansen (technically that’s Rainstorm thanks to his Hippie parents) and adds a humorous touch because his “voice” is wonderfully sarcastic and completely hysterical and endearing – I want to be his straight BFF.Rain is fresh off a 2-month administrative – aka psychiatric leave – after telling the parents of an open abduction case he was working on that their daughter was at peace because her ghost kept bugging him despite his best efforts to ignore her, and all the other ghosts he saw. He caused enough of a ruckus among, well everybody that he still isn’t exactly considered fit for duty yet and his supervisor – who really is in his corner - gives him his choice of cold cases to work on to remove himself from the situation awhile longer and continue clearing his head. It’s not exactly clear why he chooses the 5-year-old Brickell Bay Miami case of the teenage girl – Amy Greene – gone missing. It does take him to the outskirts of his hometown; where he seems to have somewhat ambivalent feelings about his hippie parents and his fraternal twin Skyler, and his hot police officer ex. Boyfriend Danny McKenna who he left 3 years ago to take a job with the FBI.Being back home and working with Danny again stirs up old feelings because Rain didn’t entirely leave for a job. He left because he considers himself an abnormal freak what with the seeing ghosts all the time; which he sort of thinks are more signs that he’s losing his mind and pops pills to mute their presence. The whole thing has also left him a bit not so much commitment phobic but closed off and guarded. And it doesn’t help that Danny has his own demons and isn’t anymore open or forthcoming. They even have a safe word for boundaries. Yep, not “stop you’re whipping me too hard”, more like “stop you’re asking me uncomfortable personal questions”. Still they had fit well and had a nice relationship with comradery and great sex and Danny while welcoming Rain back as a friend, still has his nose out of joint about his partner of four years kicking him to the curb.Turns out, home is good for Rain. He talks to his somewhat eccentric, new-agey sister and considers maybe meds aren’t the way to go. Maybe Ethan – the teenaged ghost that’s been hounding him to get a message to his parents – is right; maybe he is a medium, or a bridge or someone alive who really does see dead people and is able to help them get closure and move on. And Maybe if he really does have feelings for Danny he has to take a risk and be honest and let him know the real Rain.
