During the WWII occupation of France, the heart and strength of the German Navy sits in a heavily guarded port known as the Iron Coastand it'll take a crackerjack team of Allied commandos to destroy it. Lloyd Bridges gives "one of his best screen performances" (Boxoffice) as a major hellbent on seeing a deadly mission through to its "blazing finale" (Films & Filming). Major Wilson (Bridges) is a loose cannon, and his latest mission is a perfect fit. He must take an old minesweeper filled with explosives and ram it into the Nazi's prized naval port. The problem is, he and his crew will have only five minutes to escape this floating torpedo before it blows. Even if they succeed in taking down the stronghold, will they live to see the tide of war turn?

Commando Classic
This is your better than average Commando flick. Based on the historic raid on St. Nazaire the film attempts to re-construct somewhat loosely the events surrounding this raid. I would say it is certainly several cuts above your Guns of Navaronne fair which is pure fantasy. This film is a no-nonsense affair, with 92 mins. of pure planning and action. This is not a dull view. The planning and character clashes leading up to the actual raid keep the interest. The inter-service rivalry that hurt many British combined operations early in the war is nicely handled. The Commando training and combat sequences are realistic and beleiveable. Above all this is a realistic film. Nothing is fantastic here. St. Nazzaire (Le Clair) was a German submarine pen as opposed to surface ships port. Viewers use to hi-tech Hollywood fare today may find the special affects somewhat ameturish, but the historical intent is there, which is not often the case with more recent films. All in all a worthwhile and interesting film to watch providing a good study for British Commando operations during the earlier part of the War. Recommended

Based on actual events
This Movie portrays the guts grit and fortitude that went into action during WW2that often meant a one way trip. Based on the actual events of the British Ship Campbeltown that landed commandos at St Nazaiere Port Controlled by Nazis. Due to Legal concerns the actual events could not be reenacted. The Combat action is well formatted, not overblown Hollywood pyrotechnics. The Military Aspect is genuine, and the actors Military Bearing is well done.

1960's special effects
Picture perfectly digitally restored. Disappointed that the story is not based in my opinion on any real historical event; the target, a French coast harbor whose name does not exist either- Le Clairé. Little mention of the implicit Canadian role except by the obvious uniforms. Bridges kind of overdoes it, acting wise. Would have loved to see a little bit more of Sue Lloyd! Original if not amusing depiction of higher ranked German military movie watching. After watching it once, will give it to another WW2 buff - not worth keeping in my DVD collection.

great movie
this is a great one, from what I understand the crew was given the knights cross due to their bravery, and it was actually recommended by the German Commander to the British navy. watch it if you can.

Beach this "Attack"
This is a pretty weak WW2 commando film, with the climactic attack scene coming at night, so the filming doesn't expose the miniature models and poor special effects. It got a basically second rate cast as well, and though these actors perform well, they are wasted in endless planning sessions that take up a good deal of the film's time. If the target port is so vital to the Nazis, why are there no warships guarding it? The low budget involved here really sinks the whole effort.

An enjoyable movie based on a very real event in WWII during which many allied soldiers lost their lives. Too bad the movie wasn't a bit longer and thus would have been able to follow the real events more closely.

5 Stars
Good war movie made in 1968 with Lloyd Bridges about a mission in France, an audacious combined operations raid on the Axis held french port of Le Clare. I saw this movie long time ago to the theater, I really like it. However, to watch this movie you need a multi-region player (region 2).

Iron Coast based on an actual mission
Attack on the Iron Coast is based on an actual mission that took place during World War 2.Although the names of characters, ships and place of attack are fictional, the idea of the mission follows closely to the real mission.Operation Chariot was the code name of the actual mission. In the real attack a destroyer, USS Buchanan - renamed Campbelltown, was used to ram the Normandie drydock gates in France in March 1942. Its bow was loaded with explosives. The next day, while German officers and soldiers were inspecting the ship, the explosives went off destroying the dock and its surroundings, killing those on board and nearby.Commandos were used in the attack also, to destroy the dock installations. The purpose of the attack was to deprive the German battleship Tirpitz from using it, should she ever become damaged by air or naval attack. In the movie version, Lloyd Bridges plays a Canadian officer put in charge of Operation Maddog. It shows the commandos in training. There are personal conflicts with officers over the mission.Because of shortages during the war, instead of being given a destroyer, he is given a minesweeper for the mission. All the more tension is created. But the mission is set into motion against all odds. The movie is interesting and enjoyable to watch.Add this one to your War Collection.
