doesn't smell too bad in yard. Has lots of gritty and dusty filler BUT IT WORKS
the directions say it might take 3 weeks to see results so it's working or not is still up in the air. ( I don't get that since if a deer smells predator it should skedaddle immediately or become dinner. I would think it should be the opposite,,, and the deer decide there really isn't a predator after three weeks.) I expected it to smell like some sort of urine but it smells more like rotted garlic but the smell isn't apparent more than a couple of feet away. I hated the consistency. It's like mostly sandy filler and a fine dusty grit that really clings to you. Wear a bandana over your mouth and nose. You need to shower and hair wash after applying. My gut says it won't do much but if it works and the plants get a chance to grow I will reevaluate this review up to 5 stars with capitals later. My little male Jack Russell has peed himself dry over the application sites but my older female JRT rolled in it. (bath for her too) so there is something 'animal' in it. (the cat ignored it.) ONE MONTH LATER....IT SEEMS TO WORK111 I HAVE HAD NO DEER DAMAGE OR SIGHTING IN THE TREATED AREA. (and deer used to show up almost every morning and evening.) The dogs no longer take off after unseen somethings during their night outing. I have now tried hanging small bags of the stuff up inside cleaned out tin cans like the clapper in a bell and hanging one on each shrub in order to make it last thru the spring rains. I EXPECT OT ORDER THIS PRODUCT AGAIN.

It Works!
As much as I don't like coyotes in the backyard, Shake Away has become my favored deer repellent in the last two years of use. There is a highly effective Liquid Fence concentrate that I keep on hand for when I run out of the granules, but it still has to be mixed with water, carried around in a heavy sprayer, and repeated after rain. Crucial, too, is keeping the sprayer clean; lately, again, a clogged nozzle sends me to the computer to reorder the granules. Shake Away (at a competetive price, as it normally is here) is fast, easy and effective. The granules take some time to break down, so it isn't necessary to sprinkle again after every rain shower. In the autumn I sprinkle it on top after mulching the gardens heavily with leaves. After snow, I sprinkle it into such protected items as empty bird baths and feeders (which deer are as prone to go after as lilys in spring), and under an upturned wheelbarrow.I have put a small quantity into the toe of old socks and hung it with a plastic bag over it at a gate, breaks in a crumbling fenceline, etc., and found it lasts a long time and works well. When I can no longer smell it in the socks, I watch for signs of deer activity; it might be time to replace the Shake Away (although deer have a much sharper sense of smell than we do). After training the deer to stay away, I've found that sprinkling only around the perimeter serves as an adequate reminder to them, and keeps down the quantity of product needed. Shake Away is well worth the price to me.

Good product
Have been using the product for almost three weeks. The deer do walk through my property, but they do not linger and have not eaten my plants. I'll keep using the product.

Good for possums and raccoons.
I've used this for years to scare away possums and raccoons. I put it around the house once a week if I see any of the creatures around the neighborhood, then about once a month as an ongoing deterrent. I expect I use somewhat more than the instructions call for but it's been working so I keep my method. Amazon has the best price I've found but having it shipped is sometimes a problem. About half of the time, the jars have not been properly closed or wrapped in plastic so I receive a box with a pound or so of loose, urine soaked sand in the bottom. It's not very pleasant. Sometimes it's sifting out the seams of the box, too, so I think maybe the delivery person doesn't like it much.

Poor packing
I learned my lesson not to order anything else with this. Luckily, the other items can be kept in my garage. I worried when I heard a swishing in the box, when I picked it up. I opened it. The lid was off and no apparent other seal. Coyote pee was coating my other items and it stunk. Luckily, there is a decent tape job on the box and some but not the majority may have leaked out of the box. I was able to pour the remaining in the box, back into the container. The container could use a decent seal or at least packed in a plastic bag.

Works well even in high deer area
I've been buying Shake Away deer repellant for some time now, and I think it works fairly well.My wife and I live in a spot where our back yard runs up against a large field, with a small forrest just to the left. Needless to say, we see plenty of deer in our back yard during the year. We started a garden 4 years ago, and unfortunately the first year we lost most of our produce to deer. We looked into several different methods to keep deer away, and a neighbor mentioned he uses these. We gave these granules a shot, and they seem to work well. Deer have left us alone since then, for the most part, but we have found that you'll need to re-apply whenever it rains (which is does plenty in Ohio). The first year we bought the smaller container, but since then we've used the 5lb version to keep up with mother nature! :)

used as recommended by manufacturer is effective.
I use this product in combination with the same product but in a spray application. So first time I use the spray, then 2 days later I use the granules, 2x weekly for 2 weeks, then one application of spray, and one granular application within the same week. My garden is (up to now} untouched by the deer. In the winter I plan to burlap my trees.
