Yamaha 5-PIN DIN MIDI Adapter, Wirelessly Connect Your Musical Instrument and iOS device (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch) MD- BT01

I specifically purchased this in order to connect my QRS PNO3 player piano system with PianoStream.The instructions in the box are very minimal, but most musicians purchasing this will already have a good idea what they need it for and how to use it. Yamaha does have an app for this and it is necessary to download the app and update the firmware. The Yamaha app also allows this to be renamed from MD-BT01 to something else, for anyone who wants to rename this.Once that is done, I found this easy to connect with my iOS device, and the Bluetooth connection is strong. I plugged this into my QRS system, which is mounted under the cast iron plate and soundboard of my piano, and the connection remains good while I am sitting in the next room about 35 feet away, and I can operate the system perfectly with my tablet at this distance.Note that the connection has to be enabled in the QRS app or QRS WiFi interface, which I do under System Setup>Performance Setup>Routing & Delay Settings>MIDI Options>Piano Out. Then find the button “5-Pin MIDI in to PWM” and switch it on to green. Then the system works. Not very intuitive, but I worked this out over about 30 minutes and now it works flawlessly. Changing other MIDI settings in the QRS interface makes the system perform wonky.Given the high price of musical instruments and player piano system, the price of this Yamaha MD-BT01 device is an incredible bargain for the quality of the product and for what it does.This Yamaha MD-BT01 device is the perfect missing link that I needed to greatly expand the functionality of my player piano system. Normally I would take off one star for the low quality instructions in the box, but this works so well and it is so useful that it is still a 5-star product.

Very useful product. It converts your regular MIDI keyboard to a wireless bluetooth keyboard. It is very easy to connect on an iOS device. It automatically find the dongle in the app. I use both iPhone 5S and iPad Mini. However it was hard to connect to a Mac at first, but then I solved it. You cannot find directions to connect on the manual or on Yamaha's website. But the information below which I found on another website (Yamaha Synth Dot Com) helped me a lot. Since I cannot share the direct link of that web page, I share the useful information below to help other users:“Connecting the MD-BT01 or UD-BT01 to a Macintosh computer requires the use of “Audio MIDI Setup”. This is located in the Utility folder of the Mac and easily found by typing the name into the Spotlight search (the magnifying glass in the upper left corner of the screen).First, connect the MD/UD-BT01 to your MIDI device (there’s a handy red LED to let you know when the connection is correct).Then, open Audio MIDI Setup and power on the MIDI device with the connected MD or UD-BT01 (or cycle the power once, if it is already on). The Audio/MIDI Setup application starts with an overview of connected audio devices.To see the MIDI studio, choose the “Show MIDI Studio” from the “Window” pulldown menu within the Audio MIDI Setup Application.The MIDI Studio settings show all available devices along with previously connected devices. Since each system is unique, your MIDI Studio will look a little different than the one above. The devices that are available for connection are highlighted. Click on the Bluetooth icon to open settings for the MD/UD-BT-01: My MD-BT01 appears as “BA-BT-01” (I named it using the MD-BT01/UD-BT01 Utility app on iOS from the previous article).To connect the device, click the “Connect” icon under the Action column of the dialog box below:Once you have connected your MD/UD-BT01, it should show up as an available MIDI device in your DAW software. I purchased a used unit and it arrived quickly and works perfectly fine, like new.To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much from this expensive piece of plastic. I am totally blown away by how easy it was to setup and get working. My biggest concern was that it wouldn't work plugged into a portable battery pack, but it does, just fine.I'm using it with the Koala app on iPad Pro 11" 2021 and a Presonus Atom pad MIDI controller.I plug the Atom into the Yamaha adapter female USB-A port, then the adapter's male USB-A end into a USB battery pack. It just works, and it works totally seamlessly with no perceptible latency. This setup allows me to continue using the single USB-C port on my iPad to plug in my wired headphones. Solved my problem very nicely.If there was one thing I'd change, it would be to have a little ON/OFF control on the adapter, that way I could leave it plugged into my battery pack all the time.If you have a bunch of different MIDI controllers like I do, then this is a great investment because it can work with any of them. Highly recommended.
