I bought it for my 6 year old who's as big as my7 7 year old, roughly the size of an average 1st grader. He LOVED it. Here also picked it out. It was for career day at his school. Made his day and its very cute.

Q: What ages does this costume fit?

I have it for my 2 year old and it is below her knee. I would say this will fit her at least until she is 8 if not 10. The lab coat will just start getting shorter in length but the width is more than sufficient. Great outfit and she loves it.

Q: What size is the costume? Will it fit a size 8?

My granddaughter is a 5.5 year old who wears around a 6 or 7. The smock fits her just fine, but the cap is a tad tight on her head. I'd say a size 8 child could wear everything, except maybe the cap.
