Q: what is the best way to label the tag?

Avery clear laser labels (e.g., 5260) printed by a laser printer. You can change the fonts, add QR codes, or anything else you can do with a laser printer. Unlike labels from other brands I’ve tried, the text remains legible for many years, even in the blazing sun, using HP, Brother, or other printers. Make sure to print your labels on a piece of plain paper first to ensure that your label dimensions, spacing, and margins are all correct.

Q: Can a steel letter "punch" be used to mark the labels? I'd of course slide them off of the stakes to do the letter punching. Or, s the metal too thick

I used metal letters that I struck with a hammer to make an impression on the copper. I didn't have to remove it from the stakes.

Q: Can these be cleaned of writing with acetone and then re-used?

If you use a carbon pencil or grease pencil to mark your labels, you can easily remove with 000 steel wool. Thus, your labels can be used over and over.

Q: Some reviews say that the spikes that go in the ground rusted over time. What's your experience?

Had these in my raised bed garden over winter and the wire spikes are rusted very badly. Had a hard time pulling them up because there were raised rings of corrosion around each spike. These were new last spring and may last another year. The zinc plates are very thin and bend easily, also.
