Ohhhhhhhhhhhh this book hurt.
It hurt my actual heart for the whole read. I'm so confused about this review, because I feel utterly disappointed in life, but I can't say that's wrong. As a trauma counsellor, Rowell dances around the trauma with both Simon and Baz perfectly; the elephant thats in the middle of them, stopping them reaching across the expanse and grasping the love they so so clearly have. DAMN Rowell is good at writing humans. And that hurts and that also means no fluffy comfort blanket of happy endings. Just bad coping mechanisms and holding on to love any way you can.But saying that... this is fiction and I want the comfort blanket dammit!!!! And whatever I was chasing and wanting in this sequel ran off the pages, leaving me empty handed. Yet, despite all that, I read this in 24 hours... just ate it up. And I think i'd read endless Simon Snow books. The plot felt a touch plotless... but so did Carry On, so I think this might be more about Rowell's style than this book. I think she writes characters, not stories, and honestly, it works for me, even if at times I'm like... where are we going here? Because that serves us up characters like Simon, Baz, Penny, Shepherd and hell even Agatha, who are so perfectly fleshed out and real. I just wish we had a longer read, where things weren't so rushed. Let Simon and Baz's few moments linger a little longer, resolve just some of the crap between them.I love, loved the character development of Simon, how he came into his own in the end and his POV slowly became more Simon again. BUT I did want Baz to be a bit more... Baz. He felt too nice and Penny to be a bit more... Penny. We came for the girl with ALL the plans! So what do I need in book 3 for all of this to be worth it??? ROMANCE. I can take all the plotlessness, the trauma, the mundane possibility of being human... or immortal, if I get my good, real & lasting romance that we all want and deserve. SIMON AND BAZ FOR THE WIN!!!
