Still the GOAT of JRPGs - Now in a Super Convenient Package
Squaresoft in the 90s had a hit ratio that I don’t believe any other developer has ever been able to repeat. Final Fantasy 7 exploded on the PlayStation in 1997 and changed video games in two huge ways: graphics and story. Arguably one of the first, if not the first, mainstream video game that can be called “cinematic”, Square used the power of the PlayStation to show off what console gaming can be and solidified Japanese-style role-playing games as the gold standard of the RPG genre. Square also made waves by breaking with Nintendo, their traditional publishing partner for Final Fantasy 1-6, after infighting over disc gaming vs cartridge gaming (Nintendo wanted to stick with the less powerful cartridge and Square disagreed, opting to partner with Sony for their console’s increased power vs the Nintendo 64). In an ironic twist, this version is cartridge based and on the Nintendo Switch, so we’ve maybe come full circle on the matter after the initial split 27 years ago when this game was released.Anyway, this game is still a masterpiece and should be considered a mandatory play for those wanting to school themselves on the history of video gaming. It continues to earn its position as one of the most important games of all time. The version is the European Switch remaster paired with Final Fantasy VIII. It looks great, runs amazing on the Switch, and I need to go back to my original version but I believe the translation has been slightly updated for the better. The weakest part of Squaresoft’s games in the 90s was their English translations. The translators Square used were awful on top of working with completely unrealistic timelines to translate the games, making a perfect storm of mediocrity for those of us who don’t speak or read Japanese. This game is no different, leading to one character in particular being portrayed as a horribly racist caricature. I’m happy that seems to be slightly better in this translation.I know I’m clouded by nostalgia, but the game is fun, the music still hits in ways that underscore Nobuo Uematsu’s place as one of the best composers in the world, and I love these characters and this world more than a lot of real people I know, so it’s as near to perfect as a piece of media can get.

Excelente
