A MUST READ IF YOU ARE GOING TO ISTANBUL
A vibrant tapestry of fact and fiction, this epic historical novel spans nearly 100 years in the life of the Ottoman Empire. Set against the lavish backdrop of the Ottoman court, the central character is a young boy, Jahan, who arrives in Istanbul in search of fortune, and through a twist of fate ends up becoming the elephant tamer for the sultan's menagerie. A palace education brings Jahan into contact with Mimar Sinan, the emperor's chief architect, who recognises the boy's potential and takes him on as one of his assistants. Together, the team construct (with the help of Chota, the elephant) some of the most magnificent buildings in history, including the the spectacular Suleymaniye and Selimiye mosques. But all does not run smoothly, and dangerous undercurrents begin to emerge both in the empire and in the rivalry between the assistants. At its heart, this book is an ode to the beauty of Istanbul, and how a young man with a huge heart plays a part in the city's evolution.

Elif Shafak
Very well written book nicely connecting the dots of Ottoman and Turkish history. She has a nice writing style that somehow makes the story livelier and I enjoyed reading it over a couple of weeks
