Taxonomy for Learning, Teaching, and Assessing, A: A Revision of Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, Abridged Edition

Important update
An excellent book content wise. I give 4 stars purely because it is a poor quality production. It is printed on toilet paper quality paper. At the £60 price, I expect a reference book to have durable pages. This is a very important book because it attempts to update Blooms (1956) taxonomy in light of all the evidence collected since. To be fair, Bloom wrote his taxonomy before the powerful predictive theories of cognitive science were developed. The learning and teaching industry in the UK as exemplified by the simplistic approach of Biggs has not advanced beyond the simplistic and sterile notion that knowledge = facts. A generation of able academics has been labelled as dinosaurs by the learning and teaching "experts" because of this simplistic misunderstanding. A reworking of the learning taxonomy that recognises that knowledge takes many different forms and that learning and the acquisition of knowledge structures is a process is welcome. I hope someone at the top of the HEA reads this book. Perhaps the organisation will move to a more academic foundation where rigorous analysis of underlying issues is a standard.

Come on Pearson - you can do better than this
This isn't the place to critique the premise of a revision to Bloom's taxonomy. So, on that point all I will say is that the new taxonomy is not entirely convincing. My real criticism, and what earns this book just one star is its exceptionally poor format. The typography and layout look like it has been done by someone who works for Exchange and Mart. The book looks and feels like its been printed on toilet paper. All of which makes the £49 they charge for this an absolute rip off. Really Pearson, if you can't be bothered to turn out a good looking, well printed paper book then make an ebook instead. A shockingly bad ownership experience.

Quick postage, however unfortunately the book wasn't quite as informative as I had hoped!
