One of the best books I have read for young adults in many years
The cover of this book caught my eye. However, the story itself did not disappoint either. i just cannot stay focused on many books for young adults these days, but this was a fantastic read. It is a coming-of-age tale where a girl must overcome enmity between her and her mother. The protagonist is a preteen girl who had been raised by her father in the wilderness. When he sustained injuries from falling from a tree, she had to move to the city with her mother and adjust to life there. She had a gorgeous pet owl who she had to part with while staying with her mother which, to me, was the most heart-wrenching part of the story as the bird had been the only steadfast thing in her life.As her father's health improves, she learns to accept her mother and realizes that her mother loves her very much. This is a beautiful story where a young woman learns to accept the imperfections and curve-balls of life and move forward and make some new friends along the way in the process of her discoveries about life in and out of the city.

Beautiful and lyrical
A gorgeous book with a sing-song feel, prose that is like poetry and a theme of trees, wildness and an owl. Perfect illustrations too. Loved it!

Great book
This is one of my favorite reads. I read it within one day. I couldn’t put the book down. It‘s the story about a girl named October who lives in a little house in the woods with only her dad. They basically live in the middle of nowhere and have to provide for themselves by chopping up firewood everyday and trying to keep the house warm when it was a cold winter. October loved her life of living in the woods with her father. Her mother left when October was just a baby and moved to the city of England. October never forgave her for that. Everything changed when October‘s dad had an accident and fell out of one of the highest trees in the woods and was seriously injured and needed to stay in the hospital for a very long time. So therefore October was forced to live with her mother in the city in leave her old life in the woods behind. Truly an excellent story and very atmospheric for the month of October.
