Wish I'd looked this up on amazon first :(
For the price I paid when hobo ninja had it on sale .... less than the cost of seven George Washington bills ( take that amazon bots that edit out any dollar amounts I put in my reviews! :P ) plus free shipping and handling I really shouldn't complain.. but given it was a spur of the moment decision I didn't bother to examine this product - say by checking out the amazon reviews prior to purchase - as closely as I should have, something I blame myself for 100 percent. To me the pictures used at the hobo ninja website makes it look like the stream of coffee coming from the cup also lights up which would have been a REALLY nice touch, maybe some kind of semi-transparent brown plastic with lights inside of it... instead, the stream of coffee is a solid , "not light up" brown color... something that's clearly obvious on the amazon pic's ... I know I know, we should all know that the people who make the products will of course display pic's that make the product look like the greatest thing in the world then when you get it you're like " This isn't how it looked in the pic ! " :P ...I will admit that, while I have this plugged in within a room with the shades drawn, there's still some sunlight coming in that the blinds can't block 100 percent .... maybe during the nighttime this looks more like it was depicted in the hobo ninja pic's ... I'll come back and update this review if the lamp looks any different in the night... EDIT AND UPDATE... it does look better in the night time I have to admit that .. but the plastic that represents the coffee flowing from the paper cup into the white plastic cup base unfortunately still doesn't have that warm amber glow to it that the pic's imply it would... again, some see-through plastic with lights inside would have done wonders here...Was also a bit worried when I realized that the cups it comes with are made out of paper ! What if the lamp gets warm enough such that the paper cups are lit on fire? A bit paranoid on my part I know but... so far the part of the light that the paper cup rests on doesn't appear that hot to the touch so I guess it's safe ... I have it plugged into my PC's usb port and it's working well far as having enough power for the light to shine , haven't tried operating it with batteries yet ...note that you'll need a screwdriver handy to unscrew the two tiny screws that hold the battery hatch in place on the bottom ... or at least I'm assuming this is the case, hatch won't pop open when I apply pressure to the little latch on the bottom ..... would have been nice if it came with instructions, which it didn't... looks like the writing on the package is Chinese though in English it's lists a website of " www.mayfair.cc" (?!? ) .. obviously when you type it in as is on the 'net nothing comes up :P ... tried www.mayfair.com and got a "this domain has just been registered" message...EDIT AND UPDATE - do NOT try unscrewing the tiny screws on the bottom like I originally suggested, I noticed this was starting to make the entire lamp base come unscrewed ! Instead use a flat head screwdriver or some other similar device to apply enough force to pop the lever on the hatch so the hatch comes open... which to me means this really isn't the greatest design, you have to get a tool out and apply that much force to get the battery hatch open? And again if there were instructions .. heck even pictures in a tiny little booklet ! ... just stating this that would be great !If you're like the other reviewer and you have a shop that sells coffee then yes I can see how this would be great... for the average home user I was expecting a little bit more :( ...I don't blame hobo ninja in the slightest for this btw, I'm less than impressed with the product itself but I'm sure hobo ninja just used the pic's they were given by the manufacturer when they listed it on their website.. I've purchased a lot of cool stuff off Hobo Ninja in the past for very cheap prices, my kids absolutely loved the brock davis food themed shirts for example Hobo Ninja offered at dirt cheap prices and H.N. has amazing customer service, can tell you that for a fact based on my previous e-mail interactions with them! Basically thumbs up to H.N.... but thumbs down to this particular product :( ...
