Its better than most people give it credit for...
To preface:- I have been producing for 2 years- I have been using headphones prior to this purchase (MDRXB-950N1)- I prefer bass heavy music with good melodicsI was pleasantly surprised by these speakers, I wasn't sure what to expect. The frequency range it quotes is accurate and the monitors are powerful. I have an iMac and the sound output is amazing. The highs and mids are god-like for this size and the bass, although only going as low as 70hz, is more than enough for levelling and mixing ( bass is punchy and loud for my liking). I recommend these for those starting off, as you will immediately see a difference in your mixes. In other quirks, this monitor gets louder than I expected and the subwoofer can actually handle loud volumes as if it were already broken in (yay). I have this in a 10*10 room, and it fills the room with sound, although it sounds much better if you have it at eye-level likes it is meant too.The only drawback, in my opinion, is that I get the feeling that the headphone jack on the monitors is of low quality, my headphones sounded very muffled coming out of the monitor.I really recommend these studio monitors, they are amazing for a bass head like me and my rap beats. (btw it is much smaller than I expected honestly, not a bad thing though.)

Awesome speakers. Worth every penny.
Great value. For their price, their clarity is fantastic and they have nice, tight bass. I was going to settle on the Mackie CR4s before trying these, the CR4s are decent for the price range, but these DM-40s blew them out of the water and are well worth the slightly higher price tag.The Mackies have a really cool feature that the Pioneer's don't, the ability to set which speaker is left or right. This makes it really easy to accommodate your personal power set-up. They also come with isolation pads, which is cool. The Pioneers, however, have their own awesome feature--standby. Not only do they turn off when they detect no signal for a period of time, they wake up when signal is sent to them again. This is great if you're forgetful but also enables you to use them without ever really needing to touch them. The standby feature of the DM-40s trumps the CR4's speaker selection feature for me but even if it didn't the DM-40s would still be the better buy. They sound great, with a wider frequency range than the CR4s. I enjoyed listening to the CR4s but after hearing the DM-40s, the CR4s sound a bit dull. They’re great if you like your music a bit warmer and also very bass-heavy but the DM-40s are much more accurate and pack a serious punch.Very very happy I spent the extra money to get these. I'll update this review if my experience with and opinion of these speakers ever change.I understand the standby feature is a polarizing one. As far as I can tell, you can’t disable it. I can’t imagine a scenario where it would be inconvenient but some people seem to hate it. Other speakers, like the CR4s, do not have this feature. For me, it’s the cherry on top of the better-sounding speaker but if it was a feature I hated, I’d probably have to go with the Mackies instead, at this price range. (Another pair of speakers that I imagine would be in the running are the Micca PB42X. They weren’t available when I was testing speakers but I plan to test them out and compare them to these DM-40s. If they end up blowing my mind I’d keep them for specific use but definitely keep these DM-40s for general use, for all the features I love about them.)I seriously love these speakers and the standby feature. I love them so much, I wish I had a reason to buy another pair.
