A meaningful Analysis
The analysis in this book is more than meaningless trivia and easter eggs. What I got from reading this was a far deeper appreciation for a show and the characters that were already my favorites before ever picking it up. It was very insightful and did a great job of balencing being both fun to read and academic. I highly reccomend this to anyone who likes the series

A Flawed But Solid Analysis
This is a solid book with a lot of really good points to make. It draws some very apt literary comparisons and has some nice breakdowns of the visual symbolism present both in the TV series and Rebellion. The main criticisms I have with the book are its sourcing and some of the conclusiveness to the writing. Brian McAfee frequently sources the English dub voice actresses regarding their opinions on the series and its meaning. While their perspective is very interesting, they ultimately had nothing to do with the creation of the series or any of its deeper underpinnings. Unless they were taking coaching directly from Gen or Shinbo themselves (which I doubt), they're not much more expert than anyone else even if they played the roles. The other glaring issue is that sometime McAfee makes certain points very conclusively, as if to say "I have figured out precisely what Gen was going for with this and there is no other correct explanation." The most egregious line was during his introduction to the Symbolism in Rebellion bit where he says "There is a pattern that can be deciphered despite Jed Blue's insistence to the contrary."While McAfee did indeed make a very solid and believable case for his logic, nothing he said overtly disproved Blue's notion that Rebellion is so symbiotically dense that multiple interpretations can exist simultaneously. In fact, the core of Blue's argument had nothing to do with the visual components in Rebellion at all, but rather how those components fit together to derive any particular meaning. Blue never said that the grandfather clock key wasn't representative of Madoka or that Kyubey didn't parallel the Mouse Kind, his intent was to demonstrate that even with all these visual elements in place it's hard to put them together in any definitively conclusive way since they can be seen from a number of angles. These scruples aside though, the book is a solid read. I never connected Kyoko to Ophelia before, nor did I understand all the particulars of Sayaka's relation to ETA Hoffman's Little Mermaid, but this book illustrates those points and many more. It also contains a handy dandy series of witch rune charts which I love having as a reference rather than opening the Madoka wiki.
