Heavy but well accepted and works.
Like all gear, there is the fight between weight, cost and efficacy. pick 2. If you can take the hit on weight this is the best can.I did a fairly comprehensive search and could not find a trail or park that didn’t accept this model. If there is an accepted list, it’s on the list. If there is a ‘NO’ list, it’s not on there. Even the carbon fiber models have anecdotes of failure but I couldn’t find a single one for this can. Everyone knows the stories of bag failure and the problems with BV on the at and elsewhere. As for size, there are two larger canisters both made by wild ideas. I have rented the expedition and it is a fantastic can. At 6 times the price it should be. The WI also isn’t specifically listed as approved on all the park lists. I imagine a ranger would be ok with it but I dont want that hassle.Price is right. Same cost as a bv 500 and a fraction of the wild ideas. It fit in my gossamer gear mariposa but was a little awkward. Fits fine in my osprey rook. Enough room for 4-5 days/two people if you pack it correctly. Last trip we (2) had 3.5 days and 1.5ltr of vodka in here no problem. So if you have money to burn, save a pound in your pack and get carbon fiber. For the rest of us this is the can.

We hiked/camped a small section of the Appalachian trail that required a bear canister so we got this pretty much just for that purpose.PROS: 1. It was nice to not have to hang our food each night at the sections that was allowed. 2. I felt much more comfortable knowing our stuff was protected from rodents and other critters too. 3. The bright yellow is easy to spot when you are ready to go after it. 4. Roomy. We were able to fit (with some effort) a little more than 4 days worth of food for two people.CONS:1. It's heavy. It wasn't such a big deal for us as a couple since one person could carry food and the other person carry shelter/sleeping items. Splitting the load made it easier but I couldn't imagine carrying this if I was going solo. 2. The lid had to be put on just right or it wont lock properly. Several times I'd get two locks in place just to realize it wasn't exactly right and the third wouldn't lock. I'd have to unlock and start again. Not a big deal, just a pain. 3. Some other canisters I have seen are clear. This one, you have to dig to see whats in there. Again, not a deal breaker, just throwing it out there!Overall, I would recommend. It's becoming more and more common to carry canisters, even where they aren't required, and I think this is a great choice.

Bear Cannister
These are required for nearly all the areas I hike now and are a necessary evil. Got tired of renting them from the parks dept so decided to drop the money on my own. This thing is huge and not a clean cylindrical shape (I assume to make it hard for our non-opposable thumb friends to handle) which makes it a pain to carry unless you opt for the optional bag. I have an 80L pack and it fits inside, but leaves little room for much else besides sleeping bag and clothes. I can however get all food for 4 days/2 people, my optimus nova stove, GSI dualist cookset, snacks, and first aid kit in it. The yellow is VERY bright, and you will not lose this in the woods! It has a reflective tape strip around the middle and I added some more for ease in finding in the dark, but it is so yellow it nearly glows! Seriously, if you get lost this thing will make a good signal. Hopefully the bears are colorblind. The lid is very easy for human operation, but it is not sealed and water can get in if you set it lid up. Does make a good camp stool too. Oh and the thing is tough...my son booted it off a 25ft cliff because he wanted to see what would happen (I was not happy at that moment watching a 70$ plastic bucket at the mercy of gravity) but it came out with nary a scratch.SummaryPros - Large, brightly colored for ease in locating, lid easy to operate, tough, large opening for easy packingCons - Large, brightly colored, required in most areas anymore

Worth having on ANY camping trip.
It’s big,.....bigger than the others and worth it. I have a 65L backpack and it takes up most the room on the inside, but with the carrying case that you have to buy separately you can carry on the outside of your pack. I packed 8 mountain house meals some tuna packets and several breakfast meals and some condiments packets,(ketchup mustard s+p). Easy to attach to any pack. Nothing touched it, but I have peace of mind I’ll have food in the morning! Nothing sucks more than being out in the back country and having a beer and eat all your food, well worth having. Some reviews complained about the opening and closing of it??I’ve had zero issues, a quarter works great or a regular flat head screwdriver.

Well built bear canister
Used this for a 5 day motorcycle camping trip in the mountains of Georgia. There was enough room to store my food and travel smell good items (soap, deodorant, shaving cream, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc). It’s very durable and easy to open with a coin or pocket knife. The outer shell is very durable. It stored in its optional case very well, and I was able to carry it in the side case on my Concours 14 along with an REI camp chair. I chose the yellow so it would be visible in the woods when I went to look for it later. I only placed it in the ground a distance from camp on two of the days. The other 3 days I hung it from a tree in its case along with my buddy’s food bag. It wasn’t near tested on this trip, but I did find fresh bear tracks about 50 yards from its location.

Strong, seals well.
The Bear Keg works as advertized. Has a good amount of storage space and closes securely. I just wish it was lighter. I wonder if Bear Keg could make and affordable carbon fiber version. It's a relatively heavy Item to carry for backpacking.

Rolled down the stairs without opening.
I am hiking the Bruce Trail next year. Part of it is bear country, but the whole thing has raccoons. As a test I rolled it down the cement stairs in my apartment building. Didn't crack, and the lid stayed in place.

COUNTER ASSAULT Bear Resistant Food Keg
Food Keg is very solid. It is 3.9lbs and when backpacking every pound counts. I would recommend this product, knowing that it will take up space in pack and the weight.
