Fumio Demura's: Karate Weapons of Self-Defense: The Complete Edition

I trained with Demura Sensei for eight years about 25 years ago and recently started again. Back in the day, we chose one weapon and specialized in that (for me, Kama, Nicho-gama,not furi-gama). Now we train at the hombu dojo (now, soon at 10th and Parton in Santa Ana,CA) on Friday nights a different weapon every month (including eku-bo (oar,paddle), obviously four times and switch. There are now a lot of black belts to carry on the kubudo tradition (including batto-jutsu) since Sensei is now 79 and slowed by stroke and heart problems in recent years. That being said, this is a complation of 5 previous books of each individual weapon. You can even see Sensei age from book to book, lol. Still, this is a gold mine of information for classical Okinawan weaponry and weapons theory in general. Obviously, he is also coming from the tradition of shito-ryu karate (genbu-kai, not itosu-kai anymore.) As he remarks in the book, having a base in one of the four major styles on Karate is beneficial to your kubudo training and vice-versa.

Outstanding book on Okinawan kobudo. Very comprehensive. Five weapons are covered: bo, sai, tonfa, nunchaku, and kama. There is a brief history section on each weapon along with techniques and drills. My only criticism is that some of the descriptions could be a little more detailed.

PRO: It's nice having Demura's complete series in one volume.CON: the book is so thick that it is hard to lay and keep open as you work on his techniques.

This book is Huge, filled with TONS of techniques. Well photographed with adequate written explanations. You'll enjoy this.

Exactly what I wanted - All Fumio Demura's books on weapons in one volume. Perfect. Only one left to buy as advanced nunchaku was not included. Although written in years past, they are still valid and informative today.

Demura Sensei has outdone himself as always, amazing instruction, easy for anyone to comprehend and put into use. This compilation of original works should be on the shelf of every practitioner of the art.

An all out full teaching of all the correct weapons from old Japan. In depth illustrations showcase all of the moves accurately and correctly. A must have for any real martial artist.
