The sifter is well designed and functions exactly as described. Much cleaner to use than I'd expected, excess airborne ashes are sucked up the chimney and the remaining hot coals start the next fire without a need for paper or kindling. My only complaint is in the packaging. Bolts and nuts were loose inside the box with one bolt missing. I used a couple of extra bolts from around the house and avoided the loosening issues so many other buyers seem to be having.

Loose screws
This device is quite useful. We use a wood stove heater and this is perfect for sifting hot coals. The only problem is that the screws that attach the handle to the sifter are constantly loose.

Very useful as is, could be improved
I love the product and use it daily for our wood stove. I do wish the ashes fell through the holes a bit easier - you have to shuck it/bang it against something a few times to get them to fall through and leave you with the coals, which can make a mess or knock coals off of it. I think the design could be improved with a heavy wire mesh with similar sized openings and would shed the fine ash easier, cleaner and more quickly. the size and shape are perfect otherwise. Thanks for the great product!

Great Idea, Bad Execution
The product is a great idea and I had high hopes it would work as described but sadly the holes are far too small and this is not useful as a shovel nor for a way to sift out and keep your good coals. Works about as good as a screen door on a submarine.

Well intended, flawed design.
Not impressed. Too shallow of a pan, needs taller sides for adequate sifting. Holes are too small, punched round, not like the picture. Ash does not "fall thru", it requires vigorous and dangerous sifting. Fail.

Keep Your Coals, Keep Your Heat!
If you're in the market for a coal sifter, you've likely realized by now that this is not a very commercially available product. Coal sifters seemed to be fairly common many years ago, albeit slightly different in design and execution, but they appear to have been forgotten as a necessary item to compliment other fireplace/wood stove utensils. For years I have used my standard shovel to dig and pick through the ashes in my wood stove insert, so that I can reserve my coals, which takes forever, and you wind up with more ashes in your pile than you want. However, the Ash Dragon Sifter resolves this issue. You simply move everything to one side of your firebox, sift out the coals and deposit them on the other side, scoop out the leftover ashes, either with your fireplace shovel or with one of Ash Dragon's other products, the Ash Dragon Dustless Ash Scoop, and you're on your way to maintaining a hot stove with red hot coals, or even lighting right back up with the leftover cold coals. The company offers amazing customer service (I've left a review for the seller as well), and you won't be disappointed with the ease of managing your fireplace or wood stove with this product. If you're interested in the Ash Dragon Dustless Ash Scoop, I highly recommend it, and I've left a 5-Star review there as well.If one of this company's products is not in stock here, just Google "Ash Dragon," and you'll find their official website. However, I'm not sure if the stock here is directly reflective of the stock on the official website, so there's a possibility it may still be out of stock there as well.

Ash Dragon Sifter Hot Coal Ember Scoop
I have to start out by saying that the Ash Dragon Sifter Hot Coal Ember Scoop as delivered is nicely finished and a great start in design! In fact, I thought mine might be a “proof of concept” model… as it required extensive modification to make it both safe, and functional. The very first thing was a complete redesign / fabrication of the metal handle. Lengthened by 5 inches so when the unit is fully inserted in my Quadra-Fire 2100 Millennium wood burner, the wooden portion of the handle would be outside the firebox. Very important! In order to handle the increased length, I increased the thickness of the original handle material to .25 inch. It could have been a little less, but that is what I had on hand. Finally, for increased rigidity, I welded the rear corners where the metal was only bent… but not secured.I then reassembled it using similar OEM fasteners and original wood handle. I do plan to turn a new wood handle for it sometime in the future, but that’s just for me and not necessary. Finally, the outside raised edges could use a little more height to keep embers on when giving it a shake.Bottom line, the Ash Dragon Sifter Hot Coal Ember Scoop needs a proper length handle, detail finishing and it would be worth what they want for it. Would I recommend it, that would be a qualified yes.

Works fine, enable you to separate coals from ash and keep burning. I think I may get less waste in ash from shoveling out coals. Handle could be a little longer.
