Can this be used on a glass top electric stove?

This is made for gas stoves or camping stoves. Basically the vintage toasters that people used on their stoves 50 to 100 years ago. My Grandma lived out in the boonies & didn’t have electricity, so we used these at her house growing up.

Can I use it on a gas stove or portable butane stove?

Absolutely. It is designed for a flame, not an electric stove. Gas or butane flames should make nice brown toast with that toaster.

Does the base of the toaster rust and discolor

I don't know about rusting, but the heat from a gas stove will discolor the bottom.

Why so expensive. I just bought this item at Menards for $3.00
