Excellent book.I was a little concerned when I set out on this book that it would be similar to the others where a lot of information is dumped in a few pages and it is left up to the reader to figure out how to apply the examples. Or in many cases, the author will provide an ongoing example that may or may not work when actually coded using current tools. This is not the case with A Smarter Way to Learn jQuery.Mark does an excellent job of providing small bite size code to learn in each chapter. Each chapter builds on prior material, introducing a new concept. The examples are good. The exercises at the end of each chapter are really designed to reinforce what is discussed in the capture. The exercises don't intimidate, but help illustrate what you should be able to code up to that point. The "live" coding experience also reinforces what you should be able to code "out-of-your-head" in a real live editor.Because the chapters are small and meant to be consumed in short bursts, this book is a great way to develop jQuery skills for persons who may not have a lot of time to devote to the subject in a single sitting. One thing to note is that the exercises need to be run from a laptop or desktop. They don't run on a tablet or smartphone. In my case, I have the Kindle edition. This allows me to read two or three chapters on my tablet when I am away from my desk and then when I am at my desk, work through the exercises from those chapters. If you just want some hardcore dump of information, w3schools has some great free material. In my case, I prefer this approach to being deeply rooted in the technology and using W3cschools for reference and reinforcement.

All Marks Myers books are excellent beginners guide in the language that they teach
All Marks Myers books are excellent beginners guide in the language that they teach. The author succeeded in dividing the information in small enough pieces that can be easily grasped by person without any experience in the field. The online exercise, although sometimes seems tedious and repetitive helps a lot for retaining the information and boosting the confidence of the newcomer. You will not become a proficient programmer just by passing through his books, but they are creating the foundation for further development of your programmer skills. For example his books have few theoretical explanations why certain things functions in the way explained and does not explain basic conceptsIn my case I needed to learn Javascript for manipulating dynamic Adobe LiveCycle Forms. With no experience as a programmer I found it difficult to understand or to adjust the code examples or snippets existing on the web in this field.Getting through Mark Myers books (teaching Javascript) helped me not only to start writing my own code but also to understand better code wrote by others and finally to develop further insight on the language.I cannot say that I have become a proficient/experience programmer on this language but definitively I succeed in getting the hang of it.JQuery book is an excelent way of becoming accustomed with the Javascript library as it teach you a lot about the functionality of its methods.

Now I'm on the jQuery book and I'm taking to it like a fish to water
There's not much I can add to any of the other reviews on here other than to support what others have said and to add my own experience with these books. My father gifted me "A Smarter Way to Learn JavaScript". I was already taking courses/tutorials on Lynda.com and using w3schools as a reference, so I didn't take the book seriously right away as I thought I was already well on my way to becoming a JavaScript programmer. That is, until I did the first exercise. I finished the book in about three weeks, and I am absolutely sold on this method of learning. jQuery was next on my list, but as I was waiting for this book to come out I went ahead and bought the HTML/CSS book by Mark Myers to see if I missed anything. I did. I've been programming with HTML and CSS for a while, self taught, and the HTML/CSS book really helped fill and reinforce the blanks. Now I'm on the jQuery book and I'm taking to it like a fish to water. While I still stand by the use of tutorials such as Lynda.com, Udemy, or even Youtube as part of your learning arsenal, this series of books are great for beginners and self-taught advanced users who want to catch little nuances they may have missed on the self-taught and self-paced journey they embarked on. I can't wait till the Python and PHP books come out, and I really hope other author's will copy Mr. Myers's approach.

Well done!
"I keep reading HOW to program, but WHY am I not learning it and it's not sticking?" I asked. "It's because you have to USE it.", said the software engineer. Very true. I started my journey programming several years ago, only to start and quit. It was not because I did not want to learn, I needed something new -- better resources, a better guide, or more experience. Like writing, musical composition, or learning a foreign language (take note of the analogies!), you can read all the theory and techniques you want, but unless you are applying that knowledge consistently, it will be difficult to internalize it. And that is ultimately what you want to with programming.Mark Meyers does a brilliant job in leveraging technology to get you to learn jQuery in the most efficient method I have seen possible. He takes the approach of start small, learn a little at a time, and immediately apply what you have learned. This is very similar to the approach used in mathematics -- read some theory, do a LOT of novel practice problems, and read more theory to understand it better. This way, you ultimately LEARN and RETAIN it better. Then you can start using it in your own projects. And at that point, you REALLY learn it. Tutorials or guides I have used for jQuery seem to be an uninspiring rehash of the API, instead of giving you tools to actually learn the material. This book should give you a strong foundation to build from, whether it be jumping right into the API or reading a more comprehensive guide. Thanks Mark!

Cheep information.
I read a book to learn Jquery it wasn't worth it. I don't strongly recommend to you If you want to start learning Jquery. The book was affordable but any information was cheep.

Just as good as his JavaScript book
Mark's book on JavaScript was so helpful so it was great news when I found out he had written a jQuery book. It's just as useful as the JavaScript book. Together with the exercises you really will be able to learn jQuery even if you have been frustrated by traditional methods. I really hope he'll be covering more languages in the future.
