Virgil Donati -- Double Bass Drum Freedom: Book & CD Paperback – November 1, 2009

Recently I joined a hard rock band similar to the music of Metallica meets Velvet Revolver. Rehearsing music within a few weeks, I got the idea to teach myself how to play double bass drum to play music we write with an extra "embellishment".Ordering this book not only gave the abillity to teach myself properly how to play double bass but the opening pages of the book are well constructed. Virgil's first drum excersizes emphasizing the left foot are a great way to bring both feet to par (equal power in both feet). The CD also is a great way to hear the excersizes (at different tempos) then play them to bring them to the tempo indicicated in the book or faster (if you choose to). Plus, he plays some of them at much faster tempos to show how they sound; listening to them from Virgil are really cool!The book is meant to be a progression from page 1 and played building on a strong foundation. I have yet to accuratley play the first few pages at various tempos but all things come out in time. This book is not meant to play the drum excersizes and BAM, you can play them with a snap of a finger; they take time to play accuratley and conststenly. Everything depends on how much emphasis you put into this book.Listening to the CD the book provides and seeing the book progress from beginner to advanced double bass is mind blowing. I'm very glad Virgil took the time to write a book and make a CD that clearly underlines the importance of double bass in all areas. All in all, this is an excellent book with CD to learn double bass drum. To all musicians who are looking for a book to learn how to play double bass drum, I highly recommend "Double Bass Drum Freedom". Its very well worth the money!

Very good book for expanding your knowledge and creativity for double bass drumming. You can re-use so many of these ideas in different contexts.

Virgil is, hands down, one of the greatest drummers in the world, and this book does a great job of helping drummers develop their double bass drumming skills. But, it isn't a magic bullet, and Virgil never claimed it would be--you have to work diligently with his instruction in the book to improve your skills. But, if you will do that, then this book is a great asset for you. I think it is a great resource and I am still working with it to continue to develop my double bass abilities, and it is most definitely helping me improve, so it will work for you too!

Still I have to work on it but at frist glance there is a lot to take from

starting from the basic endurance exercises to the most complicated polirhythms. the next step in double bass technique.

This book is an excellent guide to evolve the double bass drum technique. Clear and has audio for all the examples , which helps a lot.
