The underbelly of paradise
'To all the holiday makers who think they're going to paradise ........ All isn't as it seems'So starts Kathryn Bonella's third book in drugs in Bali using her contacts with some of the biggest players in the scene. This is a fascinating insight to the world operating underneath that experienced by the casual tourist. Bonella details how drugs are imported and exported through the island and has unique access to the world of the big dealers and the 'horses' that do their dirty work for them. Whilst her other books focused on those doing time in jail for drug crime this book shows how some stay ahead of imprisonmentWith the recent arrest and sentencing of the British foursome for drugs in Bali it is a real eye opener. The risks that people are prepared to take are astounding and Bonella shows what motivates those involved. I found this a truly gripping and frightening exposé. Recommended

Authentically illuminates the "drug-lord lifestyle" -- and its inevitably grotesque and painful denouement
A tale of several prodigal sons -- cool, daring, proud, untouchable, charming -- who never believe that flouting the law and living to excess will catch up to them. A case study in immaturity, the disaster that starts with the words: "It seemed like a good idea at the time." The wide wake of disaster (the death and arrest of drug "mules" who get caught, the death or living-death of addicts, the corruption of individuals and then whole media and law enforcement systems) trails behind them and eventually consumes them as well. I am tempted to say this would be a good book for teenagers to read, though I fear they would get the wrong message, and see the glamour without fully appreciating the consequential collapse.Author Bonella is a terrific writer and her journalistic skills: finding things out and linking things together, are immaculate.

So good!
Genuine insight to the drug world of Bali. Love that it wasn’t too scary. So cool to hear the story through the genuine voice of dealer Rafael. So light-hearted and fun, yet tells a gripping story. Loved it. Looking forward to reading Hotel K!
