I am no expert on how to use a thermal reader. It took a bit of practice to learn how it works. This was purchased for an odd application. I was taking a road trip and wanted to cook on the engine. I thought it important to know what temperatures were produced by different parts of the engine. (The meal turned out perfect by the way.) The readings appear to be accurate. I tested it on a known surface temperature. As for longevity, I can't evaluate at this point. I would recommend this product.

First, a disclaimer: I haven't tried the meat thermometer. I have no idea why it comes with it.Second disclaimer: Please ignore the part of the title that says "colour display". It's a bog standard segmented LCD, just that different parts are different colours.I've compared this to one which costs >3x as much as usually the difference is usually less than half a degree. For the price difference, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.Once we get past that, it starts to show its price.- The thing which is driving me most crazy is that the thing beeps whenever you take a reading, and you can't turn it off.- You access the battery compartment by pulling open the front section of the of the handle (around the trigger). I'm not sure how long the hinge on it will last, it's already a bit loose on mine.- Manual definitely not written by native English speakers. I always got the idea, just had to think about it for a minute sometimes. I'll definitely give it points for including a table with the recommended emissivity rating for various kinds of things though.- Controls on the device are a bit spartan. There's three buttons and a trigger. It's not hard to know what the one which switches between Celsius and Fahrenheit means, but without reading the manual, you'll be lost on the other two.- Build quality in general. It's far from built like a toy, but definitely doesn't feel as strong as my more expensive one. One problem I have is that the area with the screen and controls, and the front of the device, have plastic covers held on by tabs on the side. I have no idea why they're there, there's nothing you can access underneath them, but after investigation (to see if there was anything to them), they're pretty damn hard to get back on.
